In the 2024 High School Graduation Exam, Lo Van Thuong - a former student of Thanh Hoa Province Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities (Thanh Hoa) excellently achieved 26.88 points in block C00 (Literature 7.75 points; History 8.75 points; Geography 9.25 and priority points 1.13) and passed the Law major, Border Guard Academy. The oldest candidate in the exam room, Lo Van Thuong, is like many other students in Sai village (Tam Lu commune, Quan Son district, Thanh Hoa province). From the moment he was born, he was carried on his mother's back to work in the fields. Hunger and hardship surrounded him, but not once did the male student think of the two words "give up", he always set the goal of pursuing education to escape poverty, setting an example for children in Sai village. Notably, this year Thuong is the only child from Sai village participating in the university entrance exam. “Life in the area where I live is still difficult, so after graduating from high school, everyone chooses to work to help their families. However, I still want to study to escape poverty and help my parents have a better life,” the Thai student confided. Most of the day, Thuong has to work with his parents in the fields, herding cows, and working on the fields. Therefore, whenever he has free time, the Thai ethnic boy sits at his desk and goes online to search for materials to help him prepare for the university entrance exam. Recalling his journey to reach his dream of a green army uniform, the young man said that he was the oldest candidate in the 2024 High School Graduation Exam at the Quan Son exam cluster (Quan Son district, Thanh Hoa province), because Thuong re-studied for the university entrance exam three times in a row. “In the 2022 High School Graduation Exam, I scored 24.5 points in the C00 block, but the standard score for the major I applied for at the Border Guard Academy was up to 28.5 points, so I had to regretfully review the exam again. However, luck has not really smiled on me when I only scored 26.5 points in the 2023 High School Graduation Exam and was only 0.25 points short of making my dream come true. Up to this moment, I really feel lucky to listen to my family's advice and receive support from teachers at Thanh Hoa Province Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities to continue reviewing for the exam again,” Thuong shared. With a fairly high score in each High School Graduation Exam, the Thai ethnic male student once thought about the dream of conquering another university. However, this thought did not last long before Thuong had to decide to put it aside, because his parents were having to pay tuition and monthly living expenses for his brother to study at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Thai Nguyen University).

Building a reasonable learning method After participating in the High School Graduation Exam three times, Thuong realized that building a reasonable learning method for himself is very important. Thuong shared: "I not only focus on mastering basic knowledge but also spend a lot of time practicing questions, there are similar types of questions but I do them over and over again". At the same time, the highland student is always active in exchanging knowledge with friends and is not afraid to ask teachers for help when encountering difficult knowledge. Thuong admitted that self-study is very important: "I don't often stay up late to study, every evening I only spend about 2-3 hours studying by myself. Once I study, I study very seriously, reviewing each lesson to master the knowledge of that lesson". Of the three main subjects, the male student rated Literature as the most difficult subject to study: "I spent a lot of time practicing writing social argumentative essays and literary argumentative essays. In addition to listening to the teacher in class, I also signed up for a home tutoring literature course taught directly by teacher Luong Dao." Thuong also shared that he loves Geography very much, so when solving problems, he always tries to read the requirements of the problem carefully and does it carefully, not making mistakes on easy questions, especially the Atlas section. As for difficult knowledge, the male student always tries to find information online, spending a lot of time practicing the questions to minimize mistakes. In addition, Thuong also concentrates highly when taking the test to avoid solving the wrong questions or misreading the meaning of the questions. Especially to be able to do advanced questions, Thuong focuses on mastering basic knowledge and applying it to the lesson, not rote learning or memorization. Witnessing his son's journey to conquer his dream, Mr. Lo Van Quan (Thuong's father) was so moved that he could not speak when he heard that his son had finally passed the exam to the school he had dreamed of since childhood. “When I heard that my son got high scores and was admitted to the Border Guard Academy, my family was very happy. Thuong’s mother even went around the village to show everyone her son’s achievements. I know that my son’s previous university entrance exam scores were enough for many other schools, but because he loves his parents, he has not stopped trying until today,” Mr. Quan confided. Looking to the future, Mr. Quang hopes that the learning and training environment at the Border Guard Academy will help his son become a good officer, contributing a small part to the development of his homeland and country.
