Police in Phu Quy island district, Binh Thuan province, said they promptly prevented a case of impersonating the Ministry of Public Security Police Department to defraud a citizen of more than VND1.1 billion.
Accordingly, at around 7:30 p.m. on June 25, Mr. DTP (54 years old), residing in Hoi An village, Tam Thanh commune, Phu Quy district, went to Tam Thanh commune police station to report that at 7:30 a.m. the same day, a man called Mr. P claiming to be an officer of the Ministry of Public Security's Investigation Police Agency.
This person said that Mr. P and his wife were involved in a major drug case that was being investigated and asked Mr. P to turn on his phone to call.
Mr. P and his wife were shocked when they saw in the video many people wearing police uniforms and said they were at the headquarters of the Ministry of Public Security asking Mr. P to provide personal information and the current amount of money in his account.
Too scared, Mr. P provided the amount of 1.15 billion VND that he was saving in Agribank, then the group of "Ministry of Public Security police" instructed Mr. P to open a personal account at another bank provided by them and then transfer the entire amount into the newly opened account.
The Ministry of Public Security investigators repeatedly asked Mr. P to keep the incident absolutely secret and not tell anyone, otherwise he would be immediately arrested.
Although he was very worried about not knowing which drug ring he was involved in, Mr. P was suspicious because the Ministry of Public Security investigators kept reminding him to keep it a secret.
Therefore, after discussion, Mr. P and his wife decided to go to the commune police station to report. It is worth mentioning that while Mr. P was at the police station, the "investigators of the Ministry of Public Security" continued to call and ask him to download the app to transfer money, but the Tam Thanh commune police promptly stopped them. After that, the Tam Thanh commune police contacted the Agribank branch to request control of the amount of money Mr. P had in his account.
Thus, since the beginning of the year, in Binh Thuan province alone, the police and bank staff have prevented 5 cases of fake phone calls to defraud nearly 9 billion VND.
