We believe that on the journey to school, each cycle will carry the children's dreams and aspirations, contributing to building a brighter tomorrow.

Mr. PHAM VAN HOA (Deputy Director of Agribank Phu Nhuan Branch)

On November 26 and 27, Tuoi Tre newspaper in collaboration with Agribank Phu Nhuan branch (HCMC) awarded 400 Sowing seeds of knowledge scholarships in the two provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue. Each scholarship worth 2 million VND includes bicycles and school supplies for poor students who have overcome difficulties. The total value of the program is over 800 million VND sponsored by Agribank Phu Nhuan branch.

You come to a new school from the Seeds of Knowledge program.

The night before, Ho Thi Theo – an 8th grade student at Thuan Secondary School (Thuan Commune, Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province) – had prepared her uniform, red scarf, and polished her sandals to receive the Sowing Knowledge Scholarship early the next morning. Theo said she was restless all night, unable to sleep well, and just wanted the morning to come.

As the third child in a family of seven siblings, Theo’s parents farm and earn about 20 million VND a year from selling cassava. They really wanted to buy Theo a bicycle, but they couldn’t afford it even though his house was 8km from school.

Every day, she goes out on the main road and watches her friends cycling to school, wishing that one day she could have a bicycle like that. Theo waits for her friends to pass by and asks for a ride to school. “It’s inconvenient, and embarrassing because I have to ask one friend after another, but my house is too far from school, how can I walk every day?” Theo said.

Receiving the brand new car, Theo smiled and just stood there admiring it. Theo said that from now on he could actively go to school, participate in extracurricular activities, and was no longer afraid to go to school. He would try to study well so that he could help his parents and village escape poverty.

Father and son Ho Van Cung and Ho Nhat Thien (grade 5, Hai Que Secondary School, Hai Lang District, Quang Tri Province) said they were very happy to receive new bicycles. Mr. Cung has degenerative hip arthritis and had to have surgery on both legs three years ago, costing more than 160 million VND despite being insured for many things.

After the surgery, he lost all his ability to work and could only do odd jobs and cook. His wife had to go to Dak Lak to work alone to take care of the family of four. Ho Nhat Thien has been going to school by himself since second grade. For many years, the old bike no longer worked, so there were days when Thien had to walk and was late for school. "Having a new bike means I don't have to worry about the bike breaking down or my child being late for school. I'm very happy and thank the program very much," Mr. Cung confided.

Long term companionship

The Sowing Knowledge Scholarship was established in 2018 and is regularly implemented every year, spanning many provinces and cities across the country as a way to share the hardships of poor students. Many students in remote and disadvantaged areas have more means of transportation to make the journey to school less arduous.

Mr. Pham Van Hoa - Deputy Director of Agribank Phu Nhuan Branch - said that in 2024, this unit will continue to implement the Seeds of Knowledge program with 800 scholarships worth 1.6 billion VND. Up to now, in seven years, the program has awarded 4,565 scholarships worth more than 9.31 billion VND.

“Bicycles are not only a means of shortening the time to school, reducing the burden on students’ families, but also a hope, adding motivation for students to confidently move towards the future. We hope to continue to accompany Tuoi Tre newspaper to help students get to school more conveniently, contributing to nurturing the future of the country,” Mr. Hoa shared.

A representative of Tuoi Tre newspaper said that the scholarships are sentiments, kind words of encouragement and recognition of the children's efforts in studying. They hope that they will be more confident in their studies, training and striving to become good citizens, useful to themselves, their families and society.

It is expected that in December, the program will continue to reach poor students in the two provinces of Dak Lak and Ca Mau. There will be 400 scholarships (total value of 800 million VND) for these two places.

Doctor treats the poor

Ho Viet Thanh Dat (grade 7, Phong Binh Secondary School, Thua Thien Hue Province) is the third child in a family of six children. Since he was a child, Dat learned how to weave fishing nets to earn money because his mother considered letting him drop out of school several times due to financial difficulties. "I want to become a doctor to treat poor people like my family," Dat innocently shared, making many people present at the ceremony choke up.

Dat's schoolmate, Ho Thuy Linh (class 9/2), said she wanted to become a flight attendant, following her late father's last wish. Although she had to walk several kilometers to school every day, she was determined: "No matter how difficult it is, I have to go to school, have a job to help my mother raise me, and take care of my grandmother."
