The dense water hyacinth covering the Le canal branch through Duc Tho district (Ha Tinh) has blocked the flow and caused many consequences.
The Le canal branch passing through Gia Thinh village, Thanh Binh Thinh commune is covered with water hyacinth.
The Nha Le canal branch through Duc Tho district starts from Gia Thinh village, Thanh Binh Thinh commune, and ends at Tuong Van village, Lam Trung Thuy commune.
The canal branch is more than 25km long, flowing through Gia Thinh, Binh Dinh, Binh Ha and Quang Tien villages (Thanh Binh Thinh commune), Trung Thanh, Tuong Van, Van Xa (Lam Trung Thuy commune).
Every dry season, water hyacinth grows strongly, covering the entire canal, blocking the flow, polluting the environment, making it difficult for people to get water for agricultural production.
Gia Thinh villagers collect water hyacinth to clear the flow of water.
Ms. Tran Thi Hong Nhi, Head of Gia Thinh Village, said: The Le canal branch that flows through the village is now covered with water hyacinth, causing blockage of the flow and serious environmental pollution. Some people lack awareness and throw garbage and dead animals into the canal, causing the canal to constantly emit a foul smell.
During the rainy season, water hyacinth blocks the flow of water, causing the water to rise and carry garbage into the houses of residents living along both sides of the canal.
Water hyacinth covers the canal section through Trung Thanh village, Lam Trung Thuy commune.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Hong Nhi, to overcome this situation, Gia Thinh village organizes to collect duckweed and clean the canal once a month, but after a short time, the duckweed grows again and covers the canal.
Gia Thinh village even agreed that each household should pay 50,000 VND/year to hire 3 people to supervise, manage and regularly collect duckweed, but it was still ineffective.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thang - Deputy Director of Bac Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited said: "The Le canal system plays a very important role, in addition to inland waterway traffic, it also provides water for agricultural production in localities. The unit is in charge of water regulation, but the dredging and clearing of the canal has not been assigned to the unit, so there is no budget source to pay for dredging and clearing of this canal."
After a while, water hyacinth covered the canal surface again.
It is thought that the canal management unit, Bac Ha Tinh Irrigation Company Limited, needs to soon survey and assess the current situation of the entire canal, propose to the relevant agencies to arrange funds to treat water hyacinth, clear the flow, and create favorable conditions for people to produce and live.
