Orphaned at a young age, having to help his mother sell lottery tickets to make a living, Nguyen Minh The's every day is an effort to gain more "wings" with the dream of working in the aviation industry.

Orphaned at 6 years old, followed mother to sell lottery tickets

Nguyen Minh The was born and raised in a poor rural area in Hong Dan district, Bac Lieu province. The's parents were farmers, growing rice for a living. When The was 4 years old, his father suddenly fell ill, and the family had to sell all their rice fields and houses to find a way to treat the disease. When The was 6 years old, his father could not overcome the serious illness and passed away.

With no place to stay and no land to cultivate, The and her three children had to temporarily stay in a thatched house owned by their aunt and uncle. Having lost the economic "pillar" of the family, The and her children received lottery tickets from agents to sell for a living. Every day, The's mother had to wake up at 4am and go everywhere in the district to sell. The and her brother, who studied in the morning, also went to sell to help their mother in the afternoon. The mother's profit from selling lottery tickets was only enough to cover daily meals and tuition for the two brothers.

"Every day, I cycle about 10 km, rain or shine, it's very hard. Sometimes when it rains heavily, the three of us are left unsold. When I go to school, sometimes I see my friends with fathers and mothers taking good care of them, which makes me sad. Sometimes I look at my mother and find a corner to cry and think I have to try harder," The shared.

During his 3 years of high school, The was always ranked as excellent, was in the provincial excellent student team, and achieved the title of "3 Good Students" of Bac Lieu province.

The shared that to become an excellent student is a process of continuous effort. In the morning he goes to school, in the afternoon he sells lottery tickets, and in the evening he studies until 3 am. Many times when studying for exams, this male student has to stay up almost all night to study.

In grade 12, The researched information, chose a major, and a school to study to become a pilot but had to give up because this profession is only for "those with conditions". In the 2023 high school graduation exam, The achieved a fairly high score: 25.75 in group D01. However, not giving up on his dream, The applied for admission to the flight operations management major, Faculty of Aviation Exploitation of Vietnam Aviation Academy and was in the group of students with the highest scores in the faculty.

Step forward a part of the dream

With his mother as his motivation, The tried even harder after being accepted into the academy. The day he got on the bus to leave his hometown for Ho Chi Minh City, all he had was a backpack, a school bag, and 3 million VND from the money his mother had saved from selling lottery tickets. The found a room and shared it with 5 other students.

"Sitting on the bus leaving my hometown, my mind was in chaos. Partly I didn't know if I would have money to pay the tuition, and partly I wondered if I would be able to find a job after graduating," The recounted.

The mother borrowed money from students in the countryside to pay the first semester tuition. In September 2023, The officially entered the university, but his mother in the countryside still worked hard every day selling lottery tickets. Not to worry his mother, he gave her more money, so after 2 weeks, The found a part-time job at a bakery in District 3. The salary he received was 100,000 VND/working session. On average, The worked 4 sessions a week.

"That amount of money is enough for me to live in the city, from paying rent to buying bus tickets. When I go to work, my boss gives me meals. When I don't go to work, I go to a 1 dong vegetarian restaurant to save money," The shared.

To maintain his dream, The still keeps the habit of studying late at night like previous years. This male student looks for free English courses online to improve his skills. Since coming to Ho Chi Minh City, The has learned how to learn English to save money.

Talking about his dream, The hopes that after graduating, he will work in his major as an air traffic controller at Tan Son Nhat airport (HCMC) or Long Thanh (Dong Nai province). And further, The wants to earn a lot of money to help his mother have a full life, travel to many places and especially rebuild a new house instead of the current corrugated iron wall.
