Nam Dinh province is located in the center of the Southern Red River Delta (in the influence of the Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh Growth Triangle and the Gulf of Tonkin Economic Belt), with an area of over 1,600 km2 and a population of about 1.8 million people.
This province borders Thai Binh province to the north, Ninh Binh province to the south, Ha Nam province to the northwest, and the sea to the east (Nam Dinh has a 74 km long coastline; there is Xuan Thuy national nature reserve (Giao Thuy district) and 4 large river mouths: Ba Lat, Day, Lach Giang, and Ha Lan).
From September 1, 2024, My Loc district will be merged with Nam Dinh city. 77 communes, wards and towns of the province (out of a total of 226 communes, wards and towns) will also be arranged into 26 new administrative units, thereby reducing 51 commune-level administrative units in the province (from 226 to 175 units).
After the reorganization, Nam Dinh province has 9 district-level administrative units (1 city, 8 districts); 175 commune-level administrative units (146 communes, 14 wards, 15 towns). The population of Nam Dinh province by the end of 2024 is nearly 1.9 million people, the 12th largest in the country; Nam Dinh has an area of 1,668 km2, bordering Thai Binh province in the North, Ninh Binh province in the South, Ha Nam province in the Northwest, bordering the sea (Gulf of Tonkin) in the East.
Before being called Nam Dinh, this land had many different names. In 1239, King Tran Thai Tong built Tuc Mac palace. In 1262, Tuc Mac commune was upgraded to Thien Truong Palace, this was the first milestone for Nam Dinh urban area.
Thien Truong Palace is a special administrative unit, with the position of a second capital. As a special administrative unit, Thien Truong is not only a political center, it is also the center of many cultural, ideological, religious, and customary values imbued with the identity of Dai Viet - Dong A.
The Truc Lam (Yen Tu) sect was founded by the Buddha Emperor Tran Nhan Tong, bringing Buddhism into the world, connecting religion with life, and accompanying the nation. Here, there are still Buddhist structures such as Pho Minh Pagoda and the 14-storey Pho Minh Tower built during the prosperous Ly Dynasty, upgraded and expanded at the beginning of the Tran Dynasty.
Under the Nguyen Dynasty, in 1822 (Minh Mang 3rd year), the name of Son Nam Ha town was changed to Nam Dinh town, the name Nam Dinh was officially born. The word "Nam" in Nam Dinh means the South, the word "Dinh" in Nam Dinh means peace and stability, the Nguyen Dynasty entrusted to this land the great aspiration for a country that is always peaceful, stable, powerful and prosperous.

In the 13th year of Minh Mang (1832), Nam Dinh town was changed to Nam Dinh province (Nam Dinh province was established), with 4 prefectures, 18 districts, including the land of present-day Thai Binh province.
The popular name "Thanh Nam" started when the Nguyen Dynasty built Nam Dinh citadel and Nam Dinh flagpole around 1812. By 1839, the citadel was built of baked bricks, gradually forming a city, wards, residential areas, and markets. When invading Vietnam, the French colonialists determined: "Occupying Hanoi and Nam Dinh means occupying Bac Ky".

In Nam Dinh, the French built the largest Textile Factory in Indochina, along with a Wine Factory and a Bottle Factory. Industrial production, services, and professions in Nam Dinh expanded and developed.
In 1890, Thai Binh was separated into a separate province and a part of northern Nam Dinh was separated to form Ha Nam province together with a part of southern Hanoi. From 1890, Nam Dinh had 2 prefectures and 9 districts left (from here on, the boundaries of Nam Dinh province were basically the same as today).
After the Tran Dynasty, Nam Dinh still held an important position in the center of the southern part of the North in terms of economy, culture, society, and national defense. During the Le - Nguyen Dynasty, they focused on reclaiming land, building dikes, reclaiming land from the sea, and expanding the fertile Red River delta; built many temples, pagodas, and shrines, encouraged the development of village and commune cultural institutions, and nurtured and fostered the core of national culture.
At the end of the French colonial period, Nam Dinh was one of 29 provinces of Bac Ky. During the resistance war against France, Nam Dinh was one of 10 provinces in Inter-zone III, including 9 districts and 158 communes.
After the August Revolution, the administrative boundaries of Nam Dinh province changed significantly. On April 21, 1965, Ha Nam and Nam Dinh provinces were merged into a new administrative unit named Nam Ha province.
On December 27, 1975, Nam Ha and Ninh Binh provinces were merged into a new administrative unit named Ha Nam Ninh province, with the administrative center located in Nam Dinh. On December 26, 1991, Ha Nam Ninh province was divided into two provinces, Nam Ha and Ninh Binh. On November 6, 1996, Nam Ha province was separated into two provinces, Nam Dinh and Ha Nam.
The economy and society are increasingly prosperous.
According to the report, Nam Dinh province's economy in 2024 will grow by 10.01% compared to 2023, in which the industrial and construction sectors will continue to play a driving role in economic growth. The economic structure will shift towards reducing the proportion of agriculture, forestry and fishery; increasing the proportion of industry, construction and services.
The total product in the area in 2024 at 2010 comparative prices is estimated at 61,222 billion VND, an increase of 10.01% compared to 2023, a high increase in the region (4/11) and the whole country (9/63). Of which, the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector increased by 2.83%, contributing 0.53 percentage points to the overall growth; the industry and construction sector increased by 14.27%, contributing 5.98 percentage points; the service sector increased by 8.56%, contributing 3.11 percentage points; product taxes minus product subsidies increased by 12.34%, contributing 0.39 percentage points.

The economic scale of Nam Dinh province in 2024 at current prices is estimated to reach 113,329 billion VND, an increase of 14.78% compared to 2023. GRDP per capita at current prices is 59.83 million VND/person, an increase of 14.35% over the previous year.
Currently, Nam Dinh province is exploiting 6 existing industrial parks and developing 10 more industrial parks, increasing the total planned area of industrial parks in Nam Dinh province by 2030 to 2,546 hectares.
Notably, according to the report (estimated implementation of goals and tasks of the National Target Program on New Rural Construction by September 2024), Nam Dinh is one of five provinces nationwide that has completed the task of building new rural areas.
In the construction of new rural areas in Nam Dinh, from 2011 to 2015, the movement to build new rural areas has brought prosperity to communes and towns in districts in this province. Among the units that have completed the goal of building new rural areas, there are 10 communes with outstanding achievements in the movement, receiving Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister.
In the 2016-2020 period, following the successes of the previous period, the number of communes and towns meeting new rural standards in Nam Dinh continued to increase, including 7 communes that had achievements in the emulation movement "The whole country joins hands to build new rural areas" in the 2016-2020 period, and continued to receive Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister.
By the 2021-2025 period, Nam Dinh's socio-economic situation continues to show many signs of improvement and achieves many positive results.
The Prime Minister has approved the Provincial Development Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, for Nam Dinh, opening up new space to attract investment for provincial development.
On the other hand, Nam Dinh is the homeland of famous people and famous mandarins. Tuc Mac village, Loc Vuong commune, the suburbs of Nam Dinh, formerly Thien Truong prefecture, is the homeland of the Tran kings and the famous military mandarin Tran Quoc Tuan (Hung Dao Vuong).
