“Although not perfect, the extension will facilitate the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people,” the joint statement on May 28 said, calling on the Sudanese military government and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to continue negotiations.

The statement was made two days after the Chairman of the Sudan Transitional Military Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces - General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan - sent a letter asking United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to replace UN Special Envoy to Sudan Volker Perthes.

In response, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Guterres was shocked by the letter. Mr. Dujarric emphasized: "The Secretary-General is proud of the work that Mr. Volker Perthes has done and reaffirms his full confidence in Special Envoy Perthes."

In a related development, Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar said on May 27 that Tunisia expressed deep concern about the situation in Sudan and its consequences for the entire region.

Mr. Ammar made the remarks during a virtual meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council to discuss developments in the Sudan crisis.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar reiterated Tunisia's commitment to Sudan's unity and sovereignty, and expressed its solidarity with the Sudanese people in pursuit of a lasting and comprehensive peace.

Tunisia's Foreign Minister also called on all Sudanese parties to protect the country's interests and return to the political reconciliation process.
