(CLO) Billionaire Elon Musk, a special advisor in President Donald Trump's administration, has supported calls for the US to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations.
Specifically, in a post on Saturday evening, Mr. Musk endorsed the suggestion of user @GuntherEagleman that: "Time to leave NATO and the United Nations." Later, Republican Senator Mike Lee also said in a post on X: "Time to leave NATO."
Mr Trump and other leaders in the US administration have repeatedly criticized NATO in the past, with the US president frequently questioning the value of the alliance and pushing allies to increase defense spending.

Days after taking office, Mr Trump said he was unsure whether the US should spend any money on NATO, telling reporters that the US was protecting NATO members, but they were “not protecting us”.
Mr Trump has repeatedly called on NATO members to spend 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defence – more than double the current 2% target and a level that no NATO country, including the United States, currently meets.
In 2024, President Trump said he would not defend any NATO member that fails to meet defense spending guidelines — signaling he would abandon the core commitment to collective defense of the military alliance, which includes 30 European and two North American nations.
Musk’s endorsement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions following Friday’s Oval Office exchange between Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte later urged Zelensky to mend ties with Trump.
