Wanting Vietnam to control the ball, Coach Troussier explains like Guardiola

" When we control the ball well, the opponent must defend and react to us. Controlling the ball is the best defense," coach Philippe Troussier said at a press conference before the match between Vietnam and Iraq this morning (November 20).

This statement from the French coach is exactly what coach Pep Guardiola once said about the ball possession philosophy. In February 2022, the head coach of Man City answered an interview: “When you control the ball, that is the best way to defend. To score, the opponent must have the ball. The less they have the ball, the better chance my team has of keeping a clean sheet."

Coach Troussier emphasized his principles with the ball control philosophy that is being applied to the Vietnamese team. Since replacing coach Park Hang Seo, the French coach has been determined and persistent in applying a new playing style to the team.

Coach Troussier believes that the Vietnamese team has the ability to operate such a style of play, meeting the requirements of ball control and proactive attack.

The French coach said: " Vietnamese players have basic techniques, the ability to move at high intensity and especially comply with tactical tactics. That is the basic foundation for them to respond to this style of play. However, they need to do better, be confident in my philosophy and in themselves to do well the assigned work. Only when they do well will they be confident and capable of confronting the top teams in the continent ."

In the previous press conference, coach Jesus Casas also highly appreciated the playing style of the Vietnamese team. The Spanish coach said that tomorrow's match will be quite difficult because coach Troussier's team has the same ball control philosophy as Iraq. In addition, Mr. Casas was impressed with the quality of the Vietnamese players.

The match between Vietnam and Iraq will take place at 7pm tomorrow, November 21, at My Dinh Stadium.
