BHG - Exporting forest products is opening the "door" to a green future for forests when exploitation goes hand in hand with protection and regeneration of economic benefits along with environmental responsibility.

Trach Duy Joint Stock Company, Thanh Thuy Commune (Vi Xuyen) specializes in producing high-tech plywood for export to international markets. In 2024, the company exported over 3,100 m3, with revenue of over 820,000 USD; since the beginning of the year, it has exported over 1,000 m3 of plywood. The source of raw materials is planted forest wood purchased from local people. Ms. Ma Thi Ha, manager at the production workshop of Trach Duy Joint Stock Company, shared: “The company's plywood products are mainly exported to India. The foreign market is very strict, production costs in Ha Giang are high due to high transportation costs, so to compete, quality must be ensured. In addition to investing in equipment, we hope that people will invest in and take good care of planted forests to have a quality input material area, helping to create good products, meeting export requirements".

At Thai Hoang Construction and Trading Joint Stock Company, Nam Quang Industrial Park (Bac Quang), in the first 2 months of 2025, the company produced over 6,400 m³ of high-quality plywood, with revenue reaching over 78 billion VND, mainly exported to the US market. This is a demanding market with high demands on product quality. With large capacity and high market demand, the raw material area in the province has not been able to meet the large number of orders, forcing the company to purchase raw materials from planted forests in other provinces, increasing production costs.

Along with plywood, giang leaves are currently a popular export item in the province. Giang is a type of bamboo, easy to grow, easy to care for, low investment cost, after nearly 1 year the leaves can be harvested, considered a "money-making leaf" tree. The whole province currently has about 1,270 hectares of giang with over 20 workshops purchasing and processing giang leaves, concentrated in Bac Quang and Vi Xuyen. The main consumption market is exported to China and Taiwan. Mr. Tran Manh Cuong, owner of a giang leaf production facility in Quang Minh commune (Bac Quang) shared: "The facility is producing about 1,000 tons of dried giang leaves/year, with annual revenue of about 40 billion VND, creating regular jobs for nearly 80 rural workers. Giang leaves are mainly exported to China; currently, the workshop is purchasing from 17,000 - 18,000 VND/kg of selected giang leaves".

Ha Giang has over 571,244 hectares of forestry land, accounting for over 70% of the natural area, of which natural forest area is 388,309.6 hectares and planted forest is 81,857.3 hectares, the forest coverage rate in 2024 will reach 59.3%. Implementing Resolution No. 16 of the Provincial Party Committee on sustainable forestry development for the period 2021 - 2025 with the goal of continuing to strictly manage and protect the entire existing forest area, striving for an average growth rate of the forestry sector of over 4.5%, forest coverage rate of 60%; the province has issued many policies and guidelines to encourage sustainable forestry development, creating favorable conditions to attract investment, especially developing production and processing of forest products to increase the economic value of forests and increase people's income. To date, the province has 190 wood and wood product processing establishments, most concentrated in Bac Quang, Quang Binh, and Vi Xuyen districts. The main products include: Plywood, finger jointed boards, compressed wood pellets, sawn timber, peeled timber, wood chips, paper, and household wooden furniture establishments; a number of factories have invested in modern, synchronous technology and large capacity to meet the requirements of exporting forestry products. The forestry production value in 2024 (at current prices) will reach over VND 1,666 billion, of which exports will reach over VND 474.8 billion, with an average growth rate of 4.43% compared to 2023. In the first 2 months of 2025, the export turnover at Thanh Thuy International Border Gate will reach about VND 39.6 billion.

Head of the Provincial Forest Protection Department Dao Duy Tuan shared: “Forest product export is an effective solution that brings economic value and opens up opportunities for sustainable forest development. When businesses and forest growers move towards green production, complying with international standards, forests will be protected and become a long-term renewable resource. To promote the potential of abundant raw materials and promote the development of the export forest processing industry, in the coming time, the Forest Protection Department will continue to advise on expanding the area of planted forests with FSC certification to meet export standards; applying science and technology in planting and caring for forests to improve productivity and wood quality”.
