According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, currently (February 29), cold air has affected some places in the northern mountainous region of the North. In the Gulf of Tonkin, there are strong northeast winds of level 6, gusting to level 8.
This evening and tonight, this cold air mass will continue to affect other places in the Northeast, then the Northwest, North Central and some places in the Central Central. The Northeast wind inland will gradually strengthen to level 3, coastal areas level 4-5.
Due to the influence of cold air, the Northern and North Central regions will experience cold weather, while the Northeast, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai regions will continue to experience severe cold, while the mountainous areas will experience severe cold, possibly lasting until March 2.
During this cold air mass, the lowest temperature in the Northeast is generally 10-13 degrees, in the Northern mountainous areas from 7-10 degrees, in the high mountainous areas below 5 degrees in some places; in the North Central region, it is generally 13-16 degrees.
At the same time, tonight until tomorrow (March 1), the North and North Central regions will have rain and light rain. From early morning of March 1-3, the area from Quang Binh to Khanh Hoa will have rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
The meteorological agency also said that from March 3-4, in the North, there will be light rain, drizzle and scattered fog at night and early morning. On March 3, the cold air will weaken, the weather will only be cold, with some places experiencing severe cold; from March 4, it will be cold at night and in the morning.
From Thanh Hoa to Khanh Hoa, from March 4, there will be rain in some places, sunny in the afternoon, and hot in some places in the western mountainous areas.
It is worth noting that right after this severe cold spell, there will be a fairly strong heat wave, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees in the North and 35 degrees in the Central region.
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Huy (Huy Nguyen), an expert on climate change and natural disaster warning, has just made comments on weather developments in the coming days.
Specifically, from March 1-3, there will be a cold spell in the Northeast and North Central regions. The cold air is accompanied by drizzle, so the weather will be cold and humid.
But from March 4-8, there is a forecast of a “sudden heat wave”. “The peak of the heat wave will be around March 5 and 6 with temperatures in the Central region reaching 36 degrees, the South Central region 37 degrees, and in some cases the Southeast region reaching 38 degrees. The Northern region will have temperatures of 25-28 degrees. There will be no rain in most regions during this period”, Dr. Huy commented.
Dr. Huy also warned that right after this heat wave, from March 9-14, there is a possibility of a cold air wave moving to the North and North Central regions, causing temperatures to drop sharply.
“Due to the sudden change in heat and cold, everyone should pay attention to protecting the health of the elderly, children and people with respiratory diseases,” Dr. Huy noted.
In addition, the coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta will still experience hot weather in the first half of March, there will be no rain, and little water from the upper Mekong River will flow, so be careful of saltwater intrusion deep into the fields in March.
In addition, this afternoon, the Southern Hydrometeorological Station also said that today, heat waves continue to occur widely in the Eastern provinces with increasing heat intensity, while the Western provinces only have localized heat waves. The highest temperature in the Eastern region ranges from 35-36 degrees, with some places above 37 degrees such as Bien Hoa-Dong Nai. The lowest relative humidity is from 30-40%.
It is forecasted that in the next 1-2 days, the heat wave will continue to occur widely, with severe heat waves in some places in the Eastern provinces and expanding to the Western provinces. The highest temperature in the Eastern region is from 35-37 degrees, some places are over 37 degrees; in the Western region, some places are over 35 degrees. The lowest relative humidity is from 30-50%. The hot weather during the day is from 12-16 hours.
The meteorological agency noted that due to the effects of heat and low humidity, there is a risk of explosions, fires in residential areas and forest fires. In addition, heat can also cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heat stroke in the human body when exposed to high temperatures for a long time.
