On August 14, at Walton Heath, Surrey (England), Lilia Vu played impressively to end the title drought of American women's golf at the AIG Women's Open.
Lilia Vu won the AIG Women's Open 2023.
The last American to achieve this success was Mo Martin in 2014, with a total score of -1 when the tournament was held in Merseyside (Liverpool, England).
Lilia Vu started the final day in joint-leading position with British golfer Charley Hull with a score of -9 strokes.
Then the golfer born in 1997 made a birdie on the 2nd Par 4 hole to take the lead with a score of -10 strokes, 1 stroke more than the opponent behind.
The advantage was extended when Charley Hull made consecutive bogeys at holes 3 and 4. On the contrary, Lilia Vu had birdies at holes 9, 10 and 12 to raise her score to -13 strokes.
In the end, the Vietnamese golfer won the 2023 AIG Women's Open with a score of -14 strokes.
Lilia Vu became the second golfer in American history to win two Majors in one year. Previously, Juli Inkster achieved this feat in 1999.
After winning the 2023 AIG Women's Open, Nelly Korda's 11th place finish helped the 25-year-old girl rise to No. 1 on the world women's golf rankings.
Lilia Vu's Vietnamese name is Vu Kha Tu, born to parents of Vietnamese descent, currently living in Fountain Valley, California (USA).
In 1882, Ms. Thuy Kieu's family (Lilia Vu's mother) immigrated to the United States with her family, then met and married Mr. Douglas Vu (Lilia Vu's father).
The couple have two children together, Andre Vu (the eldest son), who plays for the UC Riverside golf team, and Lilia Vu.
Every member of Lilia Vu’s family has a passion for golf. Therefore, at the age of 6, she started playing golf and participated in many large and small tournaments in the US.
With natural talent and passion, the Vietnamese female golfer was on the world amateur rankings when she was only 12 years old.
In 2010, Lilia Vu won the US Women's Amateur. In the following years, she continuously won the Callaway Junior World Golf tournaments.
In March 2018, Lilia Vu became the world's number 1 female amateur golfer after winning the Bruin Wave Invitational.
Three months later, she became a member of the US golf team. In January 2019, Lilia Vu turned professional.
But before reaching the peak of her career, Lilia Vu intended to retire early for many different reasons.
However, everything changed completely after her grandfather (Dinh Du) passed away in 2020.
“My grandfather passed away during the Covid-19 outbreak and I was thinking about leaving golf.
But remembering what he told me before he died, I regained my spirit and continued fighting," Lilia Vu said.
A year after that shock, the 1997-born golfer became the Epson Tour champion and led the official Ascensus Race for the Card money list, bringing her back to the LPGA Tour.
