The Lunar New Year of Giap Thin is approaching, which is also the time when garden owners in the "capital" of growing mai flowers in Ky Nam commune (Ky Anh town, Ha Tinh) are busy taking care of the trees to serve the needs of the people.
These days, the apricot garden of Mrs. Vo Thi No's family (Tan Thanh village, Ky Nam commune) has quite a lot of visitors. Mrs. No 's garden is over 1,000 square meters wide and has more than 300 trees, of which about 100 are 5-10 years old.
Mrs. No shared: "Although this year is a leap year, the weather is more favorable than last year, so the apricot trees grow and develop very well. Currently, my family has about 200 mature apricot trees that can be sold at prices ranging from 1.5 to 30 million VND each.
Ms. Dang Thi Binh - owner of a mai garden with nearly 3,000 trees in Tan Tien village said: " It's not yet Tet but my family's mai garden has sold more than 300 million VND. This year the weather is different from last year so we can't prune the leaves all at once in the garden but choose the tree, look at the young or old buds to prune appropriately...".
According to the owners of the apricot gardens, the most suitable time to strip leaves is from the 15th to the 25th of the 11th lunar month. Stripping leaves also depends on the weather, age, variety of apricot, and growth of the tree.
Stripping all the leaves will help the plant focus on growing buds, ensuring that the buds are abundant, even, plump, large, with thick petals and beautiful colors. Stripping the leaves by hand must be done very carefully, especially do not strip the leaves straight from top to bottom, doing so will damage the flower buds.
At the apricot gardens, wholesale and retail apricot buyers come directly to the place to choose the trees they like. Mr. Pham Vu Long - Ky Hoa commune (Ky Anh town) shared: " Native yellow apricot trees of Ky Nam, long-lasting, beautiful flowers with 5 petals, suitable for harsh climates, so in recent years the market for playing apricot trees for Tet is very popular. This year I plan to collect 400-500 apricot trees from the gardens to sell to the market..." .
Ky Nam yellow apricot has large, round, thick, dark green leaves; 5-petal flowers grow in clusters, deep yellow, long-lasting; hard stems and branches, dark brown. In particular, Ky Nam yellow apricot has the ability to withstand drought, waterlogging and even hot, dry climates with lack of water. The yellow apricot varieties of Ky Nam commune have shown their own unique characteristics, related to the natural and ecological conditions of the production area. This is the scientific basis for the locality to successfully build a geographical indication for Ky Nam yellow apricot in 2023.
Currently, in Ky Nam commune, there are 153 households growing mai, with a total area of nearly 7.5 hectares, with about 37,000 trees. It is estimated that the number of Ky Nam mai supplied to the market for the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024 will double compared to 2023 - about 2,000 trees.
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Huong - Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock (Ky Anh Town) said: "This year the weather is quite favorable for people in Ky Nam commune to grow ornamental apricot trees. However, we also recommend that people, depending on the actual conditions at each time, prune apricot leaves and use appropriate medicine for each tree...".
