Lao Cai e-commerce - great potential for development

Attending the conference on E-commerce Development in Lao Cai Province in 2025, Mr. La Hao - Owner of an agricultural enterprise in Yunnan Province (China) had the opportunity to learn and evaluate the potential of Lao Cai's e-commerce market, thereby expressing the wishes of the enterprise. Identified as the center of trade connection between Vietnam and ASEAN countries and the Southwest region (China), Lao Cai is a "promised land" for developing cross-border e-commerce. In particular, a number of large projects have been, are being and will be invested in, promising to open up a breakthrough development for trade connection and e-commerce such as: Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong high-speed railway project; Sa Pa airport project, Vinh Yen - Lao Cai 500 kV power line project... However, to exploit this advantage, according to experts, Lao Cai needs to attract many investors and strategic enterprises to form a customs clearance center for cross-border e-commerce. “Local authorities have created favorable conditions for the development of e-commerce. Regarding legal issues, I think ministries also need to pay attention to removing difficulties and creating favorable conditions for businesses to pay taxes as quickly as possible and for e-commerce goods to be shipped as quickly as possible,” said Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Thanh Son, Deputy General Director of Viettel Post Joint Stock Corporation.

Sharing the same view, Ms. Pham Thi Xuan, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development and Digital Economy, said that promoting logistics development and building a smart border gate model will be decisive factors. If this issue is resolved well, she believes that Lao Cai will become a pioneer in cross-border e-commerce.

Developing logistics infrastructure and facilitating customs clearance is key to e-commerce.

Aiming to make Lao Cai province one of the top 20 provinces and cities nationwide in terms of e-commerce development index by 2030, many solutions related to planning and development orientation will be implemented synchronously and drastically by the province. In particular, promoting the application of digital technology, digital transformation in e-commerce; investing in and developing logistics infrastructure, warehouses, electronic payment systems and cross-border e-commerce; aiming to build a modern and synchronous e-commerce ecosystem, contributing with the whole country to make Lao Cai a growth pole, a center connecting trade between Vietnam and ASEAN countries with the Southwest region and China.
