The Ministry of Education and Training has assigned the Department of Higher Education to draft an official dispatch requesting schools to review the enrollment of combinations of subjects that do not have core subjects directly related to the field of study.
This is the information given by Deputy Minister ofEducation and Training Hoang Minh Son at a press conference this afternoon, April 3, regarding university admissions.
According to Mr. Son, in previous years, high school students studied all subjects, so schools could recruit groups without main subjects. For example, if the medical school recruited the group Math - Chemistry - English, students would definitely still study Biology in high school.
However, this year, students are studying under the new general education program and can choose their subjects. Therefore, if students are admitted with the combination of Math - Chemistry - English, they may not study Biology during their three years of high school. This is unreasonable.
Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son emphasized that schools are autonomous in recruiting students, but they must be based on the recruitment regulations. The regulations do not specify which majors must choose which combination because there are many majors, but they must be based on the basic principles of recruitment, which are the reliability of assessing input requirements and the differentiation of candidates' abilities. If an admission method or combination cannot assess core knowledge and abilities for the training major, schools must review it.
The leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training believe that schools can completely find solutions to require students to have knowledge of subjects in the training program even though those subjects are not directly included in the admission combination, such as setting requirements on the entrance threshold for core subjects, for example, medical schools that want to recruit Math - Chemistry - English can require students to have studied Biology in high school and achieve a certain average score.
“For the health sector and teacher training sector, the Ministry will set out requirements for entrance scores in this direction,” said Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son.
Currently, many universities have announced admission combinations that do not include core subjects related to the training industry, for example, admission to the medical field but not considering Biology scores, training in History pedagogy but admission combinations do not include History, admission to Physics pedagogy but not considering Physics scores... This makes the public concerned about the quality of university training./.
