Dynamic, highly determined in economic development and enthusiastic, active in local social activities, that is what officials and people commented about Mr. Nguyen Duc Hai (born in 1978), in Village 5, Gio Hai Commune, Gio Linh District, Quang Tri Province. After completing his military service, Mr. Hai overcame many difficulties to save up capital to develop his family's economy. Thanks to his daring to think, daring to do and his hard-working spirit, he has successfully implemented a white-leg shrimp farming model in the coastal area of Gio Hai Commune.

In 1999, Mr. Hai enlisted to perform military service at the Border Guard Command of Quang Tri province. After 3 months of training, he was selected to stay and study literacy teaching methods to implement a literacy program for ethnic minorities. From here, young soldier Nguyen Duc Hai spent 2 years directly mobilizing and teaching Vietnamese to people in the border area of A Vao commune, Dakrong district.

“In 2001, I returned to Gio Hai commune after leaving the army. At that time, the coastal area here was still facing many difficulties, so it was difficult to find a way to develop the economy. Therefore, I decided to go to Ho Chi Minh City to work as a worker.

Then, in 2009, I went to work in Korea. The time I spent in a foreign country to earn money and support myself and my small family was really hard and tiring. However, I always told myself that I had to work hard so that one day I could return to my homeland and start a business,” Hai confided.

After 6 years of working in Korea, in 2015, Mr. Hai returned to his hometown and used his savings to invest in shrimp farming with some acquaintances. Initially, he and some brothers bought 2 ponds in Vinh Thai commune, Vinh Linh district with an area of about 1 hectare, worth 1 billion VND to raise white-leg shrimp.

The first shrimp crop broke even, but because the pond conditions were too far from his residence, Mr. Hai rented land and bought two shrimp ponds in Trieu An commune, Trieu Phong district to renovate, clean, and stock the shrimp. The following shrimp crops were successful, helping him earn a decent profit. This was also the motivation for Mr. Hai to continue his dream of changing his life with white-leg shrimp.

In 2018, he decided to return to Hamlet 5, right on his family's land, to dig a shrimp pond. Mr. Hai said: "My house is about 500 meters from the sea, so investing in a water pipeline to the pond is quite difficult. At that time, no one in Gio Hai commune was farming shrimp and taking water that far away.

People often choose to dig shrimp ponds a few dozen meters from the sea to conveniently bring in water from the sea. However, I have carefully calculated each step, plus realizing the advantages of placing the pond right in front of the house, so I am still determined to do it."

Mr. Hai has pooled all his savings and borrowed money through various channels to officially bring in machinery to dig a shrimp pond right in front of his house. The total initial investment capital is more than 1.7 billion VND with 2 shrimp ponds with an area of more than 2,300 m2. To be more certain, he decided to test it on the first pond with an area of about 1,100 m2.

Joy came to the young veteran when in the first month, thanks to the good water environment, the shrimp grew healthily. After the first crop, after deducting expenses, he made a profit of 330 million VND. In addition to valuable practical experience, what is valuable about Mr. Hai is his research and learning of knowledge through social networks and friends to improve his techniques and experience in developing the family economy, especially the techniques of raising and caring for white-leg shrimp. Investing in a pond right in front of his house helps him protect the shrimp pond conveniently; observe the water source, the development or changes of shrimp to prevent diseases in time; and limit the cost of hiring workers.

Receiving encouragement from his relatives and gaining more confidence, Mr. Hai decided to invest in completing the second shrimp pond with an area of 1,200 m2 on his family's land. In August 2023, Mr. Hai harvested 7 tons of shrimp from this pond. Currently, Hai's white-leg shrimp farming model brings in an annual profit of 500 - 700 million VND.

“Currently, I maintain a stable 3 shrimp crops per year, proactively ensuring stable output for the products. Next year, I will continue to invest in land improvement and build another shrimp pond with bigger goals,” said Mr. Hai.

In addition to working hard to develop the family economy, Mr. Hai is also an amateur athlete who actively participates in local volleyball, soccer, and volleyball tournaments. In addition, he has made many contributions to cultural, sports, and social charity activities in his hometown, and is loved and respected by the people as well as members of the local Veterans Association and Farmers Association.
