In the urban railway network according to the planning of Ho Chi Minh City, Metro Line 2 is the longest radial line with a total length of 48 km. Currently, the construction project of Metro Line 2 is divided into 3 phases, of which phase 1 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong) is being implemented. The project was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on October 11, 2010 with an initial total investment of VND 26,000 billion. By 2019, the adjusted project capital increased to nearly VND 47,900 billion.
Ben Thanh - Tham Luong metro route
The entire metro line 2 phase 1 is more than 11 km long, of which 9.2 km is underground, the rest is elevated and the access road to Tham Luong depot (District 12), including 9 underground stations and 1 elevated station. When completed, the line will connect the city center with the northwest, contributing to reducing traffic pressure on main roads such as Cach Mang Thang Tam, Truong Chinh, Cong Hoa, etc.
Previously, the plan to exploit metro line 2 was set for 2026. However, due to many problems related to site clearance and investment procedures, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee adjusted the completion time to 2030, starting construction in 2026.
The latest draft from the Department of Transport and Communications plans to complete the survey, front-end engineering design (FEED) and feasibility study for appraisal by mid-year. The city will approve the feasibility study report in September, then select a contractor and start construction in December.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, the site clearance for the metro line 2 project has reached 99.83%, with 584/585 cases handed over. The remaining problem is the District 3 Police Headquarters, which is awaiting completion of handover procedures between the Ministry of Public Security and the Ho Chi Minh City Police, expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year.
In addition, the relocation of technical infrastructure at 12/12 station locations and open-cut sections is also being implemented simultaneously, including electricity, telecommunications, water supply and drainage, lighting and trees. The Urban Railway Management Board said it will speed up the construction progress and complete the infrastructure relocation in the third quarter.
The project to develop the urban railway system in Ho Chi Minh City shows that, together with the nearly 20 km Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line currently in operation, in the next 10 years, the city will have a total of 355 km of metro. By 2045, this network will increase to 510 km. Upcoming metro lines are oriented to increase underground length to reduce compensation costs, speed up construction and effectively exploit underground space, combined with urban embellishment according to the TOD model.
In addition to the plan to start construction of the Ben Thanh - Tham Luong metro line at the end of this year, the draft also sets out a roadmap for implementing many groups of tasks to effectively implement the new mechanisms, including building specific legal frameworks; preparing for investment and implementing the project; perfecting the organizational structure of specialized agencies; training and developing urban railway human resources...
