In recent days, the price of fresh flowers at some major wholesale markets such as Ho Thi Ky, Binh Dien, Hau Giang... (Ho Chi Minh City) has increased sharply before International Women's Day, March 8.
According to the reporter of Cong Thuong Newspaper, the price of fresh flowers at wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City has increased by at least 50,000 VND/bunch, leading to an increase in retail prices.

Flower prices are expected to increase sharply on March 7-8, especially for domestic flowers, high-end imported flowers and designed bouquets from these flowers. Some other types of flowers also increased in price by about 20-30%. For example, sunflowers cost 20,000 - 30,000 VND/flower, white and purple lilies cost 200,000 - 250,000 VND/bunch of 10 branches, cymbidiums cost 80,000 - 120,000 VND/bunch of 5-10 branches, and orchids cost 300,000 - 400,000 VND/branch. Imported flowers such as Ecuadorian roses, Colombian roses, Dutch tulips... cost 100,000 - 200,000 VND/flower.
"This year, flower prices have skyrocketed!" , Ms. Lan, an office worker in District 3, lamented as she looked at the price list at a flower shop on Le Van Sy Street.
"Every year, a beautiful bouquet of Da Lat roses costs only about 250,000 VND, now it has increased to 350,000 VND, other types of flowers have also increased in price. Lilies imported from the Netherlands cost 400,000 VND/bouquet and now cost 600,000 VND," Ms. Lan added.
Mr. Minh, a construction engineer in Binh Thanh District, also shared: "I intended to buy a basket of Phalaenopsis orchids for my wife, but when I asked the price at a store on Phan Xich Long Street, I was shocked. A medium-sized basket of Phalaenopsis orchids cost nearly 1,500,000 VND, while last year it was only about 1,000,000 VND. I had to choose a smaller basket and add a gift box to compensate."

Explaining the price increase, traders at Ho Thi Ky flower market said that the demand for flowers as gifts increased dramatically during this holiday, creating an imbalance in supply and demand, especially for popular flowers such as roses.
In addition, input costs have increased, clearly shown by the fact that the price of imported flowers at wholesale markets has increased significantly. The reason is that unfavorable weather affects flower productivity, increased transportation costs, as well as the cost of flower care and preservation. Along with that, the scarcity of high-end flowers such as Ecuadorian roses or Dutch tulips, with the cost of design and accompanying gifts, also contributes to the high price of flowers.
Also according to the reporter of Cong Thuong Newspaper, along with traditional flower baskets, fresh flower gift baskets decorated with fruits are very popular, with many designs and diverse prices, from only 250,000 VND/basket. The price of flower bouquets and baskets has only increased slightly by about 10-20% compared to Valentine's Day on February 14 and has not increased compared to last year. Currently, a bouquet of red roses from Da Lat costs from 300,000 - 400,000 VND/bouquet, sunflower bouquets, mixed bouquets of Ecuadorian roses with carnations, hydrangeas from 600,000 - 850,000 VND.

Regarding the current flower purchasing power, many flower stall owners said that the number of customers coming to flower stalls has begun to increase, especially the interest in unique designs combined with accompanying gifts. Many consumers have proactively placed orders in advance to ensure they get the bouquet they want.
However, the difficult economic situation has caused buyers to tighten their spending, affecting the purchasing power of high-end flowers. The high prices of imported and domestic flowers have also put pressure on retail prices, making many customers hesitate.
“This year the economy is in trouble, so the shop has added cheap bouquets priced from only 150,000 - 200,000 VND to serve customers. However, these bouquets are only bought in large quantities on March 8th, currently customers mainly buy bouquets priced from 300,000 - 500,000 VND” , said the owner of a flower stall on Pham Van Bach Street (Tan Binh).
To attract customers, many shops not only sell flowers but also focus on designing more attractive product models. They decorate flowers with bamboo baskets, plastic bags, transparent mica boxes, or design flowers in sets, combos with accompanying gifts such as candles, cakes, and even eye-catching fruits, with prices ranging from a few hundred thousand to millions of dong. |
