On March 17, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with the People's Committee of Dien Bien province and the National Political Publishing House to organize the national scientific conference "Dien Bien promotes its potential and advantages for sustainable tourism development."
The workshop is part of a series of events for the National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024, held after the opening ceremony, contributing to continuing to effectively implement the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws on tourism development in general as well as exploiting the potentials and developing sustainable tourism advantages in Dien Bien province in particular.
Attending the workshop were representatives of leaders of central departments, ministries and branches; research institutes, training institutions; Vietnam Tourism Association, Vietnam Travel Agency, Vietnam Hotel Association; companies, businesses, travel agencies; researchers and scientists from many different fields.
In his opening speech, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung said that each locality must have unique and typical products, development must be even, focusing on linkages. Therefore, within the framework of Dien Bien National Tourism Year, the Workshop was held as an opportunity to listen to the opinions of scientists and practitioners to make practical contributions to the development of tourism in the country in general and Dien Bien in particular.

Sharing about the tourism picture of Dien Bien at the workshop, Secretary of Dien Bien Provincial Party Committee Tran Quoc Cuong said that Dien Bien has many potentials and advantages, with the special national historical site of Dien Bien Phu Battlefield, a rich multi-ethnic culture, majestic scenery, etc. In 2023, the province surpassed the 1 million tourist arrivals mark for the first time, an increase of nearly 25% over the same period last year. However, the results achieved are still very modest; the scale of tourism activities is still small.
Affirming the desire to find an answer to the question: What needs to be done for Dien Bien tourism to truly develop?, the Secretary of the Dien Bien Provincial Party Committee hopes that this scientific conference will be a forum for managers, policy makers, and experts in the tourism industry to analyze and evaluate tourism potential, the effectiveness of tourism development resources in the overall socio-economic picture of Dien Bien province; and evaluate the achieved results.
In particular, clarify the "bottlenecks" and "knots" in the development of Dien Bien tourism; forecast the influencing factors, on that basis find solutions to promote and effectively exploit the core values of Dien Bien to develop tourism, attract and satisfy tourists, orient the development of Dien Bien tourism comprehensively, quickly and sustainably.

In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha emphasized that Dien Bien is still a poor province, but has many potentials and advantages that can be exploited. Therefore, if Dien Bien determines tourism to be a key economic sector, the most important thing is to discover, arouse and strongly develop the hidden potentials.
Within the framework of the workshop, the Deputy Prime Minister "ordered" the delegates to find answers to the questions: Specifically, what potential does Dien Bien have, how can we promote the value of that resource, create connections, find investors and designers to create greater attraction?
Regarding Dien Bien province, in the process of tourism development, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha also noted a number of issues that need to be taken into account: Firstly, it is necessary to point out the challenges facing the tourism sector in order to find solutions to overcome the difficulties and challenges. Secondly, it is necessary to develop key, directional, strategic, and breakthrough solutions to develop the tourism sector.
Third, we must pay attention to selecting and introducing unique tourism products that are both distinctive and local specialties, but also associated with the historical value of the Dien Bien Phu victory. Fourth, we must quickly connect Dien Bien tourism with the national and international tourism network. We must focus on applying 4.0 science and technology and the era of global information explosion to introduce and promote the tourism, cultural and historical values of Dien Bien, thereby creating inspiration and attracting more tourists.

In addition, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha said that Dien Bien needs to identify and promote the connection between 4 parties (State, Scientists, Managers, Businesses, Farmers) in tourism development, on the basis of taking the community tourism model as the center, associated with the development of green tourism, sustainable tourism, and carbon tourism.
With the aim of listening to suggestions and comments for tourism exploitation and development, the Workshop attracted many discussions and exchanges with more than 80 quality presentations from managers, scientists and experts at the central and local levels. It clarified, analyzed deeply, and assessed closely and accurately the current status of tourism development in Dien Bien; influencing factors, opportunities and challenges; proposed directions, tasks and solutions such as promoting the exploitation of cultural and historical heritage treasures, building a cultural environment in traditional festivals, and developing tourism products associated with natural values .
