Specifically, farmers sell Japanese purple sweet potatoes at a price of 800,000 - 850,000 VND/quintal (1 quintal = 60kg) (an increase of 100,000 - 150,000 VND/quintal compared to the same period last year. After deducting expenses, growers make a profit of about 400,000 VND/quintal. Meanwhile, milky white potatoes, paper white potatoes, and pumpkin potatoes are purchased by traders at a price of 180,000 - 280,000 VND/quintal.

Regarding the reason for the price increase, many traders said that the area of sweet potatoes of all kinds has decreased compared to previous years, especially the area of Japanese purple sweet potatoes. Along with that, it is not yet the peak harvest season, so the prices of all kinds of potatoes have increased.

Ms. Vo Ngoc Tho, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Tan District, said that as of May 2024, the district had planted 513 hectares of sweet potatoes, a decrease of 286 hectares compared to the same period last year. Recently, due to unstable potato prices, people have switched to growing rice, vegetables or growing fruit trees.

According to the Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Tan District, the sweet potato market has now recovered. However, sweet potato consumption markets have increasingly high demands on product quality and design.

To restore production, farmers are forced to change their farming practices, producing according to GAP and organic processes... to create clean, safe food products, safe for the environment and meet the requirements of today's demanding market.

Up to now, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Tan district has coordinated with the professional agency of Vinh Long province to issue 50 growing area codes (MSVT). Of which, 45 MSVT are for export (42 codes for sweet potatoes, 1 code for durian, 2 codes for jackfruit) and 5 domestic MSVT (2 codes for durian, 1 code for sweet potatoes, 1 code for jackfruit, and 1 code for watermelon).
