(QNO) - In the mountainous district of Bac Tra My, party members with their youth, enthusiasm and exemplary spirit are constantly contributing to the prosperity of the mountainous region.
The spring sunshine shines after days of relentless winter rain. Mr. Nguyen Van Buc - a medical staff, together with principal Phan Duy Bien, visited the family of student Dinh Bao Tram (grade 3, Tra Ka Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities). Her mother passed away, so Tram's father raised two young siblings to study...
“Every month, Mr. Bien and I deduct a portion of our salary and call on benefactors to support us. Sometimes we buy notebooks, clothes, fish sauce, salt, rice, instant noodles... to bring to Tram's family. The main thing is to encourage them, we advise the parents to try to make a living so that Tram and her brother can go to school properly” - pitying the single father raising his children, in a difficult family situation, Mr. Buc shared that he often comes here...

To change the actual situation, the Party Cell of Tra Ka Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Tra Ka Commune Party Committee) with 18 party members (including 15 young party members) initiated the model "For the young bamboo shoots". After more than half a year of operation, the model has initially recorded effectiveness. Students who are accompanied by party members to help them make progress in their studies, their lives gradually become more stable. The Party Cell of Tra Ka Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities was commended by the Bac Tra My District Party Committee for "Skillful Mass Mobilization" in 2024.
Similarly, joining hands for the poor, the Ba Huong village Party cell (Tra Dong commune Party Committee) launched the model "Raising piggy banks for the poor to celebrate Tet".
Following the success of two clever mass mobilization models “Intercropping peanuts on cassava land” and “Animal feed storage house”, the Ba Huong village party cell with 12 party members wanted to implement the model for social security. As soon as the idea of raising pigs was initiated, the young party members of the cell immediately mobilized people to raise pigs together.
Responding enthusiastically, regularly feeding the pigs and calling on people to support the piggy bank of the Party cell, young Party member Bui Thi Bich Sen expressed: “The whole village has 23 poor households out of 191 households. As a Party member, I am aware of my responsibility for the development of my hometown and these meaningful activities need to be spread. It is simply saving a little money but can somehow support difficult circumstances.”
The sound of drums and gongs is a cultural feature of the Co people. It has become a legend, a consistent identity of the people in the majestic Truong Son range. Since ancient times, the indigenous people in the Tra Nu mountain area have had great difficulty growing rice. So at the end of October, when the rice plants are ready for harvest, the villagers organize festivals to show gratitude to the mountain god and the rice god. And the sound of drums and gongs resounds throughout the mountains and forests, combined with skillful dance movements, showing off the gentle beauty of the Co women, representing the end of a season of prosperity and happiness.
When the information age exploded, the young generation gradually became indifferent to the national cultural identity. In villages 1 and 2 (Tra Nu commune), the sound of drums and gongs of the village elders gradually became less and less…
Focusing on building a generation of young artisans as the core force, next to preserving, promoting, and integrating national culture, in March 2024, the Co young generation gong club was established. Under the management of the Commune People's Committee, the club is implemented and increasingly developed by the Tra Nu Commune Youth Union.
After nearly 1 year of operation, from 22 people, the club now has 30 members (70% of whom are party members). The club not only gathers outstanding young people with a passion for art, but also 5-6 year old children enthusiastically participate.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phuong (90 years old) and other village elders and older people who understand gong culture are always ready to teach the young generation of the Co people. “When I get old, my hands and feet shake and I can’t dance anymore. But we have to preserve our culture. Whatever the children don’t know or need, we will teach them everything,” said Mrs. Phuong.
Despite being the breadwinner of a rather poor family, with elderly parents and two young children, Nguyen Van Bua (born in 1992, Party member of Village 1, Tra Nu Commune) - leader of the gong drum group - has never missed a meeting. Mr. Bua said: "As a Party member, I have to be a pioneer. I don't just establish a club and then leave it there, but I have to be dedicated, set an example for the children to practice discipline, and be aware of the value of national culture."

Since high school, Mr. Luu Van The (Thanh Truoc village, Tra Dong commune) has cherished the dream of developing typical products such as wild bamboo rats. “I asked acquaintances, searched online or asked to join youth groups to learn about bamboo rat farming models. I once tried raising a pair of bamboo rats to understand their living conditions, habits, reproduction, diet, prices, and markets… After transferring from managing protective forests from Tra Kot to become Deputy Secretary of the Tra Dong Commune Youth Union, I set out to realize my dream,” said Mr. The.
In 2022, Mr. The invested 70 million VND to build a 50m2 farm, raising 20 pairs of bamboo rats. Food for bamboo rats is available from local crops such as bamboo, corn, and wood. In addition to the source of breeds from his farm, he imported more breeds from large farms in Tra My town. Through the process of developing breeding, Mr. The currently owns nearly 100 rats, of which 20 pairs are in the breeding period.
In 2024, the Deputy Secretary of the Tra Dong Commune Youth Union sold 30 meat rats and 10 pairs of breeding rats. Of which, the meat rats were raised by him for about 12 - 15 months, reaching 1.3 - 1.6 kg/rat, ensuring delicious meat, no fat, tough skin, sold for 500,000 VND/kg; and the breeding rats, Mr. The sold for 900,000 VND/pair, about 5 - 7 taels. He sold them to traders in Tien Phuoc district, Tam Ky city.

In addition to the indigenous bamboo rat breeding model, the young man from Tra Dong commune also develops a garden economy. Registering to plant 150 bamboo trees, Mr. The hopes to expand the local plant variety to serve the OCOP products of his hometown.
Not only is he an energetic Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union, Luu Van The is also a typical example of economic development. The model of effectively raising bamboo rats and growing native bamboo varieties is the result of the efforts towards local specialty products.
Mr. Trinh Quoc Linh - Chairman of Tra Dong Commune People's Committee
Also starting from local livestock, Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung (Duong Dong village, Tra Duong commune) owns 2 civet farms with nearly 1,000 cages. To proactively source food for effective civet farming, Mr. Dung grows bananas and raises fish. In addition, he also buys bananas, including bad bananas, for local people.
From 100 million VND invested in building a barn and raising the first 6 civets in 2021, his market is now widespread in restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, Khanh Hoa, and Hanoi. Selling at 1.8 million VND/kg to restaurants and 1.7 million VND/kg to traders, in 2024, Mr. Dung will earn more than 250 million VND from civets.
Civets are wild animals, so when raising them, they must be registered at the one-stop center of the commune, ward, or town. Civets will start to reproduce after 2 months, each litter will have 2-5 babies. A female civet gives birth to 2-3 litters a year. This breed of animal can be sold after 9 months of care, with an average weight of 3-4kg/animal.
“I am always willing to cooperate and support those who have the same idea of starting a civet farming business in providing breeds, breeding techniques and product consumption markets. This year, I will take advantage of the land I have and buy more to expand the scale of the civet farm,” said Mr. Dung.
