(CLO) Israel has launched a series of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, killing nearly 90 people, including many sleeping children, after the US once again vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire.

Palestinian health officials say at least 66 people were killed in an early Thursday morning attack on a residential area in Beit Lahiya, in the besieged northern Gaza.

Hussam Abu Safia, director of the nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital, told Al Jazeera that most of the victims were “sleeping when they were killed”. He added: “A large number of casualties have arrived, and there are still many bodies stuck to the walls and ceilings. Most of them are children and women.”

Also on Thursday, at least 22 people, including 10 children, were killed in Israeli shelling of the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City, a civil defense spokesman said.

After more than 13 months of Israeli attacks on Gaza, the death toll has surpassed 44,000 Palestinians, including more than 17,000 children, and 104,000 wounded. With aid largely cut off, many in the densely populated territory now face starvation.

The attacks on Thursday night came hours after the Security Council again failed to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, with permanent member the United States the only “No” vote among the body’s 15 members.

This is the fourth time that the Biden administration has vetoed such a resolution since the war began. The US previously abstained from another Security Council vote that resulted in a ceasefire resolution that was later ignored by Israel and could not be implemented.

As the latest international effort to end the fighting fails, civilians in Gaza continue to suffer, especially in the northern province which has been under a siege by Israel for more than six weeks. Israel says it wants to prevent Hamas from regrouping.

In addition to the ongoing shelling, people across Gaza are struggling to cope with a worsening humanitarian crisis as winter approaches.

Most Palestinians forced to flee Israeli attacks live in tents and makeshift shelters that are inadequate to withstand the cold winds and rain. The Norwegian Refugee Council has warned that more than a million Palestinians in Gaza will not have enough shelter in the coming months.

Some areas of the territory of 2.2 million people are on the brink of famine and growing numbers of civilians are suffering severe food shortages.

According to reports, the entry of aid trucks into the area has been severely hampered by Israeli authorities and more recently by criminal gangs operating in Israeli-controlled areas.
