Over 74 years of establishment and development, the Vietnam Journalists Association has always been recognized and highly appreciated by the Party, State and people for promoting its role as a representative organization to protect the legitimate rights and interests of journalists in their practice; educating journalists to comply with the law, regulations and professional ethics.
Enhance the role and prestige of the Association
Over the past 74 years, the Vietnam Journalists Association has grown in both quantity and quality. From nearly 300 initial members, the Association now has more than 25,424 members operating in 307 units at all levels (63 provincial and municipal journalist associations, 21 inter-associations, 223 affiliated associations). With 13,435 members, 63 provincial and municipal journalist associations account for more than 50% of the total number of members nationwide.

The consolidation and improvement of the organization of the Vietnam Journalists Association has always been of concern, thereby creating unity, solidarity, and strongly promoting the role of the Association. The Association's operating methods have been innovated and created to meet the requirements of a revolutionary and modern press. The Standing Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association has issued many documents directing and guiding all levels of the Association to strengthen the work of political and ideological education, professional ethics of journalists; foster and improve professional skills; organize, inspect and supervise the implementation of the 10 articles of the Code of Professional Ethics, Rules for the use of social networks of Vietnamese journalists; strengthen the management of the activities of members who are reporters of press agencies residing in the locality; respond to and launch the emulation movement to build a cultural environment for press agencies. Press agencies proactively develop and organize the implementation of internal rules and regulations associated with ethical standards, the set of criteria for press agency culture and journalist culture.
Training and fostering work is always focused on by all levels of the association, aiming towards a revolutionary press that is combative, professional, modern and humane. Inspection and supervision work; protection of the legitimate rights and interests of members are always given attention and promoted. In 2023, the Central Association organized 29 supervision sessions at the Inter-Associations, affiliated associations and a number of local Journalists Associations, contributing to tightening discipline and order, improving the role, quality and efficiency of operations. Nearly 300 Councils for handling violations of professional ethics of Vietnamese journalists from the Central level to the affiliated association level have increased their activities, handling, deciding to expel and revoke membership cards of violators.
Based on the results of the handling of the grassroots council, the Central Council for Handling Violations of Professional Ethics has handled and recommended handling 14 cases involving 10 cases of reporters and members violating the law and the Rules for Using Social Networks. Most of the cases involved reporters who were on probationary contracts and were not members of the Vietnam Journalists Association. The rate of violating members accounted for 30%, concentrated in magazines. The Council for Handling Violations of Professional Ethics of Vietnamese Journalists has also issued decisions to expel and revoke the cards of 4 members who violated the law when the verdict came into legal effect.
Identifying the protection of the legitimate rights and interests of members and journalists as one of the top important tasks, also in 2023, the Vietnam Journalists Association strongly recommended that law enforcement agencies investigate and strictly handle cases that hinder the legitimate practice of members and journalists; sent 14 official dispatches to intervene in complicated cases, such as cases of reporters being assaulted and threatened while working; reported on reporters being assaulted while working; sent documents to the competent authorities where the incident occurred to investigate and properly handle violators.
Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Nguyen Duc Loi commented: In general, the association at all levels has promoted the spirit of solidarity - discipline - innovation - creativity - development; promoted the role of the leader in implementing the political tasks of the unit, creating positive changes in the activities of the association. Thanks to that, the activities of the association at all levels are increasingly professional, practical, and in-depth. The role and prestige of the Vietnam Journalists Association are increasingly enhanced in the life of journalism and society.

In the coming time, the Vietnam Journalists Association will focus on basically completing the key goals and tasks set out in the Resolution of the 11th Congress, the Resolutions of the Executive Committee and the entire working program for the 2020-2025 term with the motto "Solidarity - Discipline - Innovation - Creativity - Development". Accordingly, the 11th Congress of the Vietnam Journalists Association has identified the task of promoting the development of Vietnamese revolutionary journalism in a professional, humane and modern direction, proactively integrating with regional and world press, selectively absorbing the quintessence of world culture in accordance with Vietnamese national culture. Some key tasks include: Building a clean and strong team of Vietnamese revolutionary journalists to meet the increasingly high demands of the requirements of tasks in the new situation. Strengthening ideological education, improving political capacity; promoting professional training and journalism skills in the digital age; Training in the application of new technology in journalism activities; special attention is paid to training, cultivating and promoting professional ethics for journalists and members.
In addition, the Journalists Association at all levels coordinates with press management and direction agencies to effectively participate in press management and direction work, ensuring that the press properly implements its principles and purposes, and builds a healthy and effective press environment. Actively protect the legitimate rights and interests of journalists and members. Coordinate to prevent and strictly handle acts of obstructing, threatening, insulting, and assaulting journalists and members who operate in accordance with the law...
In the immediate future, in 2024, the urgent task for all levels of the Journalists' Association is to continue to consolidate and build the organizational system, innovate the content and methods of operation, prepare all aspects for the Congresses at all levels, towards the 12th National Congress of the Vietnam Journalists' Association, term 2025 - 2030; constantly improve the role and quality of activities, contribute practically and effectively to the propaganda and dissemination of the goal of building a professional - humane - modern press and media in the spirit of the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress. Build a team of journalists to meet all requirements; promote people's foreign affairs activities, enhance the Association's prestige in the international arena, especially in the ASEAN community...
Recently, at the conference to deploy the activities of the Vietnam Journalists Association in 2024, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda Department Nguyen Trong Nghia assigned key tasks to the Journalists Association at all levels. That is, to continue to thoroughly grasp, deeply understand and effectively implement Directive No. 43-CT/TW, dated April 8, 2020 of the Secretariat on strengthening the Party's leadership over the activities of the Vietnam Journalists Association in the new situation. This is a very important political task that needs to be implemented regularly, in accordance with the practical situation.
The Head of the Central Propaganda Department also noted that the Journalists Association at all levels needs to orient press agencies to closely follow the practical cause of innovation and development of the country, current issues; deeply and vividly reflect the breath and pulse of life to produce many quality, objective, truthful, highly combative press works, with profound cultural and humanistic values. In addition, the Association needs to focus on the inspection and supervision of members to overcome the phenomenon of some levels of the association and press agencies still violating the law and professional ethics of journalists; must discipline, revoke press cards, membership cards and expel from the Vietnam Journalists Association.
At the same time, journalists' associations at all levels promote propaganda, dissemination, strengthen inspection and supervision of the implementation of 10 Codes of professional ethics for Vietnamese journalists, Rules for members and journalists when participating in social networks; emulation movement "Building a cultural environment in press agencies"; especially with the management of members who are reporters of resident press agencies...
