Launched at the end of March 2023, the project “My Project 23” for students in grades 6 and 7 of the MDE (Maker - Design - Engineering) Invention Department - The Dewey Schools Cau Giay entered the final round on May 23 with the participation of the 5 best projects. In the final round, the projects will be presented to the “sharks” to call for investment capital for their products.

Knowledge goes hand in hand with life

With the project “My Project 23”, students not only apply the knowledge they have learned in the MDE subject but also the interdisciplinary knowledge of Career Business, Natural Sciences and IT. The project helps students practice thinking to solve “life problems”, critical thinking, logic, information searching and creativity, in addition, it is a combination of necessary skills of the global citizen generation such as: presentation, debate with a confident and proactive attitude.

In the final round, the students were the event organizers, who also planned to invite the sharks to attend, give objective assessments and invest in their own products.

Students in grades 6 and 7 start community-oriented projects.

At the end of the fundraising final, Ms. Vu Luu Chinh - CEO of CEC Edu Education System shared: "I find this an interesting and modern form of learning. Dewey has applied interdisciplinary learning in the form of projects so that students can directly experience and put students in very specific situations, giving students challenges to convince outside "investors".

I have also invested in 2 of your projects, this is the answer to your success. I believe that the children who participate in the project as a lesson today will have valuable experiences that not all 6th and 7th graders have.

The issues you choose to create your inventions are very practical, such as the environment, health, etc. It also shows the "shape" of a school with its "products" being the students, because whatever we direct students to, they will have the opportunity to look deeper into those issues, and this is the value of sustainable development for the community. I also really like a learning environment that directs students to humanistic values in learning and training like at Dewey."

Learning through experience

Learning projects like “My Project 23” are always a creative way to test subject knowledge and bring excitement to learning and discovering new knowledge for students when they are “free” to express their personal opinions, passionate about inventions or fly with new ideas.

Learning through real-life experiences gives students specific perspectives and valuable lessons such as: when ideas come into practice, many problems will arise, you need to adjust accordingly; when working in groups, how to avoid conflicts while still being effective; when confused when presenting in a crowded place; reacting extremely quickly when being "twisted" by the sharks...

During that process, students understood that, to create a complete product to bring to market, inventors not only need new ideas but more importantly, they need to meet consumer needs, optimize production costs, and have competitive prices...

Le My Ha Anh, grade 6, with the Math Board Game project that received investment from all 3 sharks, excitedly shared: “ Before entering the finals, we were quite worried because we felt that the product was not really perfect and we were overwhelmed when we received investment from all 3 sharks. In the future, we will improve the product based on the contributions of the sharks today. The product comes from the fear of Math of the whole group in particular and of students in general, so we want to bring a product that helps you both study and play and create more interest in Math ”.

The 5 finalist projects all had their own impressions. The Gen Z and Family group with a project that delved into the issue of Domestic Violence. They created a handbook with tips to avoid domestic violence and hotline numbers to contact in case of domestic violence. With this project, they successfully raised capital with a 50% investment from Shark Chinh and sold 20 notebooks right there to another shark.

Summer Calendar Group brings a handmade calendar product project with a difference compared to other products on the market. This is a desk calendar product that counts down to summer vacation - a vacation that students are looking forward to. Every time they open a new calendar page, customers will have an interesting surprise, it can be a puzzle, a gift or a useful advice. With this product, you successfully called Shark Hung to invest 50%

The Snack Healthy group focuses on the aspect of improving snacks to make them healthier for consumers.

The "dreamy" Boardgame group created a product to help students love 6th grade Math more. This is a product with small minigames from math formulas, a way to help students be more interested and love difficult-to-remember formulas. With this project, the sharks agreed to invest 100% of the capital raised and you must choose a shark companion.

The last group, who is very concerned about the problem of waste pollution in rivers and lakes, has come up with a design for a type of waste collection machine based on the scientific knowledge they have just learned at school. With this product, they have called 50% from Shark Hung.

Ms. Doan Thi Lam Oanh (Project Teacher) said: “ In My Project 23, what is extremely special is that the groups can choose their own project topics. Through the lens of their own lives, the children can speak up about the issues they care about, find solutions for themselves and those around them, from familiar daily stories to macro, global issues.

The learning process through projects sometimes challenges students with many difficulties when the group cannot agree on ideas, the topic is stuck, the product is not as expected,... but with the spirit of design thinking, I am happy to see that the children know how to learn from failure, know how to bravely choose, and are determined to solve their life problems. Through the project, I hope that in addition to practicing skills, the children will be able to apply their acquired knowledge to practice, spread their positive spirit and creativity to solve life's problems, and have an impact on the community in the role of the global citizens that they are becoming."

Maker, Design and Engineering (MDE) is one of the subjects of The Dewey Schools integrated from Mount Vernon Partner School - Top 10 Innovative Schools in the US Award 2017. Maker, Design and Engineering (MDE) will help students develop the ability to solve problems intentionally through self-study and self-improvement.

Students will have many useful experiences not only in class projects but also in brainstorming, designing and creating products that are highly applicable to real-life work.
