Students in Ho Chi Minh City this year have 11 days off for Tet, 5 days less than previous years, so many parents are concerned about whether they will have homework during Tet?
No homework, no test the week after Tet
Students in Ho Chi Minh City will have an 11-day Lunar New Year holiday from January 23, 2025 to February 2, 2025 (ie December 24, Giap Thin year to January 5, At Ty year). According to the principals, teachers will not assign any homework to students during this holiday to help students have time to relax and celebrate the holiday with their families. This decision was agreed upon during a professional meeting between teachers.
Ms. Tran Thi Hong Thuy, Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), shared: "Every year, not only students but also teachers, everyone looks forward to the Lunar New Year holidays to return home and reunite with their families. While 365 days of the year are spent studying and working, why don't we spend 11 days to have a full vacation with our loved ones? After that, both teachers and students will enter a new year with excitement, joy, and dedication."
With that in mind, the Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School said that he has deployed to all teachers of the school the regulation of not assigning homework in any form to students during this break. In addition, in the first week of returning to school after Tet holiday, teachers also do not conduct regular tests, which will make students feel tired and pressured.
Nearly 3,000 students of Tay Thanh High School (Tan Phu District) have also received a notice from teachers that there will be no homework to do during the Tet holiday. Mr. Nguyen Quang Dat, Principal of Tay Thanh High School, said that as soon as the Tet holiday schedule was announced to teachers, the school board requested that teachers absolutely not assign homework, projects, or learning tasks for students to do during this time. Any unfinished homework that can be done before Tet should be completed, and the rest should be temporarily put aside for after Tet. The only thing teachers need to tell students to do during this time is to ensure safety and health when playing. During the first week of returning to school, teachers will not conduct tests or quizzes on old lessons.
At Tran Hung Dao Primary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), according to regulations, teachers do not assign homework to students but encourage students to participate in family activities during Tet. Ms. Le Thanh Huong, Principal of Tran Hung Dao Primary School, said that before the Tet holidays, the homeroom teacher of each class will organize a life skills lesson to guide and encourage children to help grandparents and parents clean and decorate the house. They will instruct children on traditional Tet customs so that students know, understand and love their relatives.
The principal will be flexible in resolving any student's need for a few more days off.
In addition, Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that Ho Chi Minh City has issued a document instructing schools to proactively develop educational plans for the school year and create favorable conditions and reasonable solutions for students who do not reside in the city during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday.
According to Mr. Minh, in order to create conditions for students to participate in a traditional national activity, which is the family grave-sweeping ceremony, and to create maximum conditions for students and their families to return to their hometowns during the Lunar New Year, the Department of Education and Training has instructed schools that if there are difficulties with transportation or the hometown is far away, and students need to take a few more days off, the principal needs to flexibly resolve the issue so that the school still ensures enough time for teaching, learning, testing, evaluation and completing the education plan in the 2024-2025 school year according to regulations.
Previously, on December 12, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued a decision to adjust the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday schedule. Accordingly, the City People's Committee approved the proposal of the Department of Education and Training to adjust the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday schedule for preschool education, general education and continuing education in Ho Chi Minh City to have a total of 11 days off for the 2025 Lunar New Year, an increase of 2 days compared to the previous plan.
