My child said stopping extra classes is like having a second Tet holiday.

(Dan Tri) - Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Quyen (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi) shared her children's joy after the school announced the end of extra classes.

Ms. Minh Quyen's child is studying in grade 6 at a public school in Bac Tu Liem district. Before Circular 29 took effect, her child studied 3 afternoons a week at school. In addition, she let her child study math with her homeroom teacher 2 sessions a week.

Since last Thursday, Ms. Quyen's child has completely stopped taking extra classes. "It's like having a second Tet holiday" is the happy feeling her child has after being able to stay home all afternoon during the week and not having to go to extra math classes on Sundays.

"I have two children. The older one is in 10th grade. They can cook for themselves. In the afternoon, I text them to remind them to study, do their homework, and then play whatever they want.

Not only are my children happy, I also feel relieved. I don't know what their future study results will be, but for now, I see that my children don't have to struggle with studying.

Last week, the teacher did not send any messages about the students neglecting their homework. The students still consciously completed their homework. As for using their phones more, it is unavoidable," Quyen shared.

Ms. Vu Thi Phuong (Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi) has two children in grades 9 and 6. "Happy" is also the common feeling of both.

"Both of my children have the habit of self-studying, so stopping extra classes does not affect them much. My 9th grade daughter was a bit worried about math at first. But after trying to figure it out on her own, she said she understood it. She set a goal of getting into Kim Lien school, so she tried very hard.

My son in grade 6 can take extra classes or not. He is not paying attention. Every time I ask about his homework, he says he has done it all in class. Besides, because he is passionate about STEM, if he stops taking extra classes, he will have more time for this hobby," said Ms. Phuong.

"Parents whose children are proactive and self-disciplined in their studies are almost always happy," said Ms. Nguyen Minh Trang (Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi).

Ms. Trang is both a parent of an 11th grader and a teacher. Her child is preparing for the IELTS and SAT exams, so she needs to focus all her time. Stopping tutoring has actually been beneficial.

However, according to Ms. Trang, one week is too short to say whether stopping extra classes is good or bad for students, even those in the top group.

"Learning cannot be separated from exams. Exams are one of the important measures to evaluate learning effectiveness. However, it is clear that students are more "relaxed" and comfortable.

Psychological comfort can be a motivation for one student and a barrier for another. So even though parents are happy, they need to be closer to their children to establish rules and study discipline," Ms. Trang expressed.

From another perspective, Ms. Hoang Thi Van, a chemistry teacher in Hai Duong, said that the new regulation on extra teaching and learning causes disadvantages for disadvantaged students and students around the average level.

"In reality, not all students are lucky enough to receive attention from their families. In nearly 20 years of working, I have met many students who live far away from their parents, or are abandoned by their parents. If they do not receive close supervision from teachers, it will be very difficult for them to progress.

Don't expect that teachers can teach students the ability to learn by themselves. The ability to learn by themselves is usually only found in children who have received good education from a young age, including both family and school.

This is not the case for disadvantaged students. They need more time from their teachers. I say frankly that they need more tutoring.

For that group of students, no teacher or school charges any tuition. But the new regulation requires free teaching, but no more than 2 periods per week, so the knowledge will dry out before it can be absorbed," Ms. Van stated her opinion.

Ms. Van expressed her hope that there would be additional guidelines to avoid disadvantages for disadvantaged students.

"Each student's ability and circumstances are different, requiring teachers to apply different means and methods to help students achieve results. Quantifying extra study time and applying a common number to all students goes against the policy of differentiated teaching," Ms. Van emphasized.
