Pham Thi Thao Nguyen (20 years old, in Dak Ha commune, Dak Glong district, Dak Nong province) has just become a new student of the Veterinary class, Dak Nong Community College.

Two years ago, Thao Nguyen graduated from high school but then she chose to go to work instead of continuing her studies like her classmates. During the time after graduation, Nguyen did many freelance jobs, the place she worked the longest was a local beauty spa.

Sharing the reason for choosing to learn a trade, Nguyen said that after 2 years of working hard in society, she realized that to have a stable income, workers must have high skills.

Although Nguyen used his own money to learn beauty care, he realized that most of the skills he acquired came from the experience of people in the profession. When his professional skills were not good, his job was not very favorable, and his income was only enough to cover his daily living expenses, Nguyen decided to quit his job and go to vocational school.

"Although it's late, I think it's still a reasonable choice at this time. I plan to learn a trade to gain knowledge about animal care. Later, if I have the opportunity, I will open a store providing livestock and veterinary services in my commune," Nguyen revealed his plan.

Learn a trade to reduce the burden on the family

Instead of trying to get into high schools like before, many students in Dak Nong after graduating from junior high school have decided to choose vocational training. During their time studying at vocational training institutions, they have the opportunity to both study general education and access professional knowledge.

Sung Thi Gio (19 years old) and her younger sister Sung Thi Sung (16 years old) in Giang Chau village, Dak Ngo commune, Tuy Duc district have just become new students of Dak Nong Community College.

Gio and his sister both chose to study veterinary medicine, because they grew up in a farming family and were familiar with and proficient in animal husbandry.

Gio and Sung are orphans. For nearly 10 years, the two female students have been adopted by officers and soldiers of Regiment 720 (Army Corps 16).

After graduating from junior high school, the two sisters also hesitated before choosing to go to high school or vocational school. In the end, both Gio and Sung chose to study at Dak Nong Community College.

Gio said: "Right where my two sisters live, a new middle school and high school were built, so we planned to continue high school. However, the soldiers all advised us to choose vocational training, because vocational training is suitable for the abilities of both sisters. Especially, during my time studying at school, I can still study more culture."

Both Gió and Sùng are ethnic minority students with extremely difficult circumstances. In addition to the monthly dormitory fees, both are exempted from tuition fees throughout their studies. According to Gió, that is also the reason why she chose to learn a trade, to reduce the economic burden on her sister's shoulders back home.

"Currently, only my older sister is working to support two younger siblings, which is a huge burden. Going to vocational school, we don't have to worry about tuition and monthly rent. After graduating, if we want, we can continue to study at college or university or use our vocational degree to apply for a job. At least with the knowledge I learned in 3 years, I can apply it to develop the family economy," Sung Thi Gio shared.

"Harsh" 10th grade admission

In the past three years, high school entrance exams have become a topic of interest to many parents and students in Dak Nong province.

Many people say that the current admission process to grade 10 is more rigorous than admission to colleges and universities, because the annual quota assigned to schools compared to actual demand has a large difference.

Over the past three years, many high schools in Dak Nong have faced pressure in recruiting new students (Photo: Dang Duong).

Enrollment quotas for each school are limited, especially for schools located in district and city centers, which pushes the competition rate up.

Some students who were not admitted to their desired schools chose to apply to district schools. Some students even accepted to study at high schools nearly 100km away from home.
