On March 2, General Secretary To Lam wrote an article about lifelong learning. The World and Vietnam Newspaper had an interview with Professor, People's Teacher Nguyen Lan Dung about this story.

Learn to master new technology

According to the Professor, why has lifelong learning become an important factor in today's era?

Technology is evolving at a rapid pace, leading to major changes in many fields. The skills and knowledge we learn today may become obsolete in the near future. Therefore, in my opinion, lifelong learning helps individuals maintain and update the skills needed to adapt to change.

Meanwhile, the increasingly competitive labor market requires workers to not only have basic knowledge but also to continuously develop and improve their skills. Lifelong learning helps workers maintain their competitiveness and meet the increasing demands of employers.

New occupations are constantly emerging, while old occupations may change or disappear. Therefore, learning helps workers to change careers easily and flexibly. Learning not only helps to improve professional skills but also expands knowledge, develops creative thinking and problem-solving ability.

"The rapid change in technology means that previously learned skills can become obsolete in a short period of time. If we do not continuously update and improve our knowledge, we can be left behind in the career race."

It is worth noting that the traditional education system no longer fully meets people's need for lifelong learning. Online courses, distance learning, and e-learning platforms have made lifelong learning easier and more flexible.

Moreover, lifelong learning helps people maintain their adaptability, develop their careers, improve their quality of life and cope with the constant changes in the digital age.

Young people today have access to a wealth of learning resources through online platforms. However, there are still challenges they face. Can you share with us the biggest challenges young people face when it comes to lifelong learning?

In reality, lifelong learning is not always easy and young people still face many challenges. Lifelong learning requires high self-awareness and discipline, but many young people are not fully equipped with self-study skills and effective time management, leading to ineffective learning.

In addition, today's youth face many pressures from society and family, such as academic performance, degrees and unemployment... These pressures can make them feel stressed, tired and lose motivation to study. Many young people do not know what they want to study, how to study and what they study for. They lack guidance and support from family, school and society.

To overcome these challenges, young people need to have a clear study plan, know how to choose reliable learning resources, maintain personal discipline, and apply knowledge into practice.

During career development, changes in the labor market and new technologies can affect the need for learning. What do you think about the connection between lifelong learning and career development in the 4.0 era?

In the 4.0 era, the labor market is constantly changing with the emergence of new technologies, requiring workers to constantly update their knowledge and skills to adapt.

The rapid change in technology means that previously acquired skills can become obsolete in a short period of time. If we do not constantly update and improve our knowledge, we can be left behind in the career race.

The labor market requires not only deep expertise but also flexibility and the willingness to learn new skills. Traditional jobs are becoming less and less available, replaced by jobs that require workers to perform many different roles, with the ability to innovate and be creative. Therefore, lifelong learning is a key factor in helping individuals not only develop their careers but also adapt successfully. Importantly, young people must learn to master new technologies and enhance their self-worth.

At the same time, continuous learning is also about developing soft skills such as critical thinking, communication skills, time management and teamwork. These skills not only help employees build sustainable careers, but also work effectively in diverse and constantly changing environments.

In the digital age, new technology is not only a job changer but also an opportunity to expand careers. Online learning platforms, distance learning courses, social learning, and the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-based learning support tools all create opportunities for workers to learn and improve their skills. Learning and utilizing modern tools and technologies helps workers not only keep up with but also stay ahead of career development trends.

Finally, learning is not only meaningful for career but also helps each individual develop comprehensively, enhance self-worth. Continuously learning and improving skills helps workers meet market demands, master their work, make a difference in their career and have the ability to be creative and innovative in their work.

It can be said that in the digital age, lifelong learning is not only a necessary requirement to maintain career development, but also the key to help workers build flexible, creative and sustainable careers. Continuously learning and adapting to changes in the labor market is a prerequisite for not only surviving but also thriving in the technology era.

Degrees are one part, lifelong learning is the key

With many years of research experience, can you share effective and sustainable learning methods that young people can apply to continuously improve their knowledge and skills?

In my opinion, lifelong learning must begin with each person's self-study. Before starting to study, you should clearly define the goals you want to achieve. Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Clear goals will help young people focus and be motivated to study.

In addition, young people should make a detailed study plan, plan daily, weekly, monthly study plans and allocate reasonable time for each subject or skill. It is important to ensure that the study plan is suitable for your schedule and ability.

At the same time, you should use a variety of learning methods. Don't just read books and listen to lectures, try different learning methods such as learning through videos, podcasts, online courses; learning through practice, experience, projects; participating in study groups, discussions.

"International degrees and certificates are a useful tool, but lifelong learning is the decisive factor for success in the modern working environment".

Learning does not stop at school but is a continuous process. Always be ready to learn new things and update your knowledge and skills. Consider learning as a joy and an indispensable part of life. In addition, young people should also practice self-study and time management skills, seek support from family, friends, teachers and experts, take advantage of reputable and quality online learning resources, constantly practice and apply knowledge into practice.

Learning is a long journey, requiring perseverance and effort. However, if young people can apply effective and sustainable learning methods, they will certainly succeed.

The world is changing so fast, there are many online learning tools, from free courses to learning support apps. Knowing how to take advantage of these tools will help you learn effectively and save time.

In addition, an important learning method is to develop critical and creative thinking. Young people need to learn to ask questions, analyze and evaluate information instead of just passively receiving it.

Many young people today tend to seek international degrees or certificates. What do you think about the value of these degrees in the modern working environment?

The trend of young people today seeking international degrees and certificates is completely understandable and reasonable. In today's globalized working environment, international degrees and certificates are proof of the ability and professional level of workers, especially in fields that require international skills and knowledge.

However, I would like to emphasize that qualifications are only one part, lifelong learning is the key factor for success. Qualifications can help young people have a good start, but to develop a sustainable career, it is necessary to continuously learn and update knowledge and skills. In the modern working environment, employers are not only interested in degrees and certificates but also focus on candidates' adaptability, problem-solving skills, creative thinking and teamwork ability.

Therefore, in addition to pursuing international degrees and certificates, we need to focus on lifelong learning to comprehensively develop the skills and knowledge necessary for career success. In other words, international degrees and certificates are a useful tool, but lifelong learning is the decisive factor for success in the modern working environment.

Thank you, Professor!
