"Hello, we won, we are the champion," Mr. Chung said over the phone to his wife, Mrs. Pham Ngoc Uyen, after the final whistle of the gold medal match with Myanmar on the evening of May 15.
In her house on Ngoc Ha Street (Ba Dinh District), Ms. Uyen congratulated her husband and the members of the Vietnamese women's football team amid the laughter of her children and grandchildren.

"He calls me right after the final whistle for any important match. That call is not just an announcement but also a gift for his wife and children," she shared.
Mrs. Pham Ngoc Uyen and Mr. Mai Duc Chung have been married for 47 years. That day, the poor football player met the young teacher, who was a rich young lady from the old town, and fell in love with her. Overcoming many obstacles, they were together.
From his twenties until now, at the age of seventy, Mr. Chung has fought everywhere. He once admitted that in that situation, if it were not for his wife's understanding and love, there would be no Mai Duc Chung - the captain of Vietnamese women's football.

After nearly 5 decades together, Ms. Uyen said she witnessed many ups and downs in her husband's career. There were times when he failed, but in front of his students he was still a teacher who encouraged and motivated them. Only when he returned home did he return to his true self, also sad and self-reproachful.
Knowing that her husband is always passionate about the football field, Mrs. Uyen encouraged him, "When competing, there will be wins and losses, but you must always fight with all your might so that you have no regrets. Your wife and children will take care of the housework, so please contribute as long as you can."

Today, the son's family gathered at his parents' house to watch the final match. The victory of the Vietnamese women's team prevented Ms. Uyen from going to bed, even though it was nearly 11 p.m. Coach Mai Duc Chung's wife was expecting him to return soon. "My family will definitely have a party to celebrate," she said.
On the evening of May 15, 2023, the Vietnamese women's team excellently defeated Myanmar 2-0, thanks to goals from Huynh Nhu and Thanh Nha to win the 32nd SEA Games Gold Medal. This is the 4th consecutive championship and also the 8th in the history of the Southeast Asian Games of the Vietnamese girls.
