A series of top universities 'turn their backs' on considering transcripts in 2025

Admission based on academic transcripts is becoming a trend of a number of large universities in the 2025 admission season.

According to the newly announced enrollment plan, the University of Commerce plans to enroll more than 5,320 students in the 2025-2026 school year with 6 enrollment methods, including: direct admission and priority admission; considering 2025 high school graduation exam scores; considering capacity assessment results, thinking assessment; considering a combination of graduation exam scores, transcript scores with international certificates; considering a combination of graduation exam scores and provincial-level excellent student awards.

Thus, compared to previous years, the University of Commerce has stopped considering independent transcripts.

This year, Hanoi University of Industry will consider direct admission (no quota limit); consider international certificate scores or excellent student awards combined with high school transcript scores of three subjects in a combination (10%); based on graduation exam results (80%); based on Hanoi National University's competency assessment test scores combined with transcripts (5%) and Hanoi University of Science and Technology's thinking assessment test results combined with transcripts (5%).

Compared to 2024, the school will no longer consider academic transcript scores independently, instead combining this criterion with international certificates, excellent student awards, and test scores to assess capacity and thinking.

Hanoi National University of Education will use 3 admission methods in 2025 (instead of 5 methods as in 2024), including: admission based on the 2025 high school graduation exam scores; direct admission, giving priority to candidates with outstanding abilities and achievements; admission based on the 2025 capacity assessment test scores organized by Hanoi National University of Education.

The two methods eliminated by the school include considering high school transcripts and considering the combination of aptitude test scores with transcript scores, graduation exam scores or capacity assessment scores. Transcript scores are only a separate admission condition for pedagogical majors at Hanoi National University of Education.

Similarly, the University of Education (Thai Nguyen University) does not conduct early admission based on academic records and will not organize an aptitude test for preschool education in 2025.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology maintains 3 stable admission methods: talent selection, thinking assessment test results and high school graduation exam results, not separate admission based on academic transcript results. From 2022 onwards, Hanoi University of Science and Technology used academic transcript scores as a condition for admission based on high school graduation exam scores and thinking assessment. However, in the past 2 years, the school has also removed this requirement.

The National Economics University also abandoned the method of admission based on academic records. The reason given by the school is that over the years, the school has realized that most excellent students in specialized schools are eligible for admission based on international certificates or private exam scores. Therefore, abandoning the method of admission based on academic records will reduce the false rate, because a candidate can use many methods.

In 2025, the National Economics University will maintain 3 stable admission methods compared to 2024, including: direct admission (2%); combined admission (83%) and admission based on high school graduation exam results in 2025 (15%, down 3% compared to 2024).

Hanoi Medical University also does not consider admission based on academic records because of concerns about unfairness for candidates (because the exam standards and scoring in each high school are different).

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade decided to reduce the admission quota based on transcripts from 30% to 15% of the total quota. After that, according to the process, the school will completely eliminate this method.

Mr. Pham Thai Son, Admissions Director, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that many public universities do not consider transcripts because the transcript scores between high schools have significant differences, leading to difficulties in accurately assessing candidates' abilities. Using transcripts as admission criteria can cause unfairness among candidates.

This person also commented that admission based on academic records makes students subjective, negligent in studying and reviewing for high school graduation exams, affecting quality. Therefore, many universities have switched to other admission methods such as using high school graduation exam results, competency assessment exams, thinking assessment or combining many criteria to ensure quality in admission.

One of the notable new points in the 2025 university entrance exam is that the Ministry of Education and Training has completely eliminated the early admission method. These are admission rounds that take place before the high school graduation exam, usually considering academic records, test scores to assess ability, thinking, considering international certificates (SAT, ACT, IELTS...) or a combination of the above factors.

Thus, schools can still use these methods, but must consider them together with high school graduation exam scores, except for direct admission according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
