The appearance of "strange" admission combinations in the 2025 admissions season has caused many people to express concerns about the quality of the recruitment source.
Confused about choosing the admission combination
In the 2025 admission season, many universities have adjusted their admission combinations due to many changes in admission regulations. Diversifying the admission subject combinations aims to expand the opportunities for candidates to enter university. However, there are also many "strange" combinations that do not have core subjects related to the training industry, causing many candidates and parents to be concerned.
For example, Hanoi Medical University this year mainly enrolls students using the B00 combination (Math, Chemistry, Biology) but there are 2 majors using other combinations: Psychology - using the D01 combination (Math, Literature, English), C00 (Literature, History, Geography) and Public Health - using the D01 combination (Math, Literature, English).
The History Pedagogy Department of the University of Education (Thai Nguyen University) has 4 admission groups, of which 2 groups do not have History: C20 (Literature, Geography, Civic Education) and D01 (Math, Literature, English).
This year, Vietnam National University of Agriculture uses 5 more admission combinations than last year. Notably, 8 out of 9 admission combinations of Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical Technology do not include Biology.
Nguyen Hoai Phuong, a 12th grader at Nguyen Trai High School (Ba Dinh, Hanoi) wants to study History Education. However, when looking into the admission plans of some schools, he is hesitant in choosing an admission combination that does not include History.
The appearance of strange combinations makes candidates and parents wonder and worry about the unfairness in the selection process as well as the quality of the selection source.
Ms. Dinh Dieu Thuy, a parent of a student at Viet Duc High School (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi) said that if the admission exam is based on combinations that do not include core subjects of the training program, candidates will encounter difficulties in the learning process, and there is also a risk of affecting the quality of training.
Adjusting admission combinations to ensure training quality
2025 is the first year that candidates graduate from high school according to the 2018 General Education Program. Candidates take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and 2 elective subjects out of 10 subjects in the program.
From the graduation exam subjects, 36 combinations will be created for 4 graduation exam subjects; 81 combinations for 3 university entrance exam subjects.
But in reality, because high school students can choose their subjects, each student does not study all the subjects in the program, so the number of graduation exam subject combinations for each student will be less than 36, and the number of university entrance exam subject combinations will also be less than 81.
Regarding the admission combinations, the representative of the Ministry of Education and Training said that the information reflected by public opinion and candidates about issues related to the appearance of new combinations is well-founded.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, from 2024 onwards, when implementing the 2006 General Education Program, candidates will study all subjects in the high school program. When taking the graduation exam, they will take 6 subjects from the subjects they have studied in the program. Thus, even though they do not take the high school graduation exam, candidates will have basic knowledge in all subjects.
Currently, when implementing the 2018 General Education Program, candidates only have a few compulsory subjects, the rest can be chosen. In this year's high school graduation exam, candidates also only take 2 compulsory subjects, the remaining 2 subjects can be chosen from the subjects studied in the program.
Therefore, if the Biotechnology industry does not consider admission to a combination of subjects including Biology, it is very possible that there will be candidates who are admitted but do not choose Biology to study in their three years of high school. When entering university, candidates will only have knowledge of Biology at the secondary level, which can make it very difficult for candidates to study at university.
The Ministry of Education and Training recommends that schools review and adjust university admissions to be linked to general education, ensuring training quality. Schools expanding their admissions combinations may not necessarily recruit more candidates, but it is certainly unreasonable and affects training quality.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training's plan, from July 16 to 5:00 p.m. on July 28, candidates can register, adjust, and supplement their university admission wishes an unlimited number of times online on the system or on the National Public Service Portal.
After the high school graduation exam scores are available, universities will announce the threshold to ensure the quality of their entrance exams (the floor score). For the education and health sciences majors, the floor score will be announced before 5:00 p.m. on July 23.
