tragic death

On December 18, 1526, Mac Dang Dung ordered Pham Kim Bang to secretly kill King Le Chieu Tong in Dong Ha ward, Thang Long, then had him buried in Vinh Hung mausoleum, Thanh Dam district. Chieu Tong was killed, Cung Hoang's role as a shield was no longer there. Dang Dung planned to usurp the Le throne, pretending to retreat to Co Trai (Hai Phong) but in reality still controlled the court.
According to Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu, in April 1527, King Cung Hoang sent someone holding a red flag, carrying a golden book, a hat and a parasol, a jade belt, a purple palanquin, a purple umbrella, and a painted fan to Co Trai village, and appointed Mac Dang Dung as An Hung Vuong, adding nine gifts including a carriage, clothes, musical instruments, vermilion doors, a throne (a separate throne on the palace to sit on), guards, bows and arrows, a royal palace, and fine wine to worship the gods. That gifting ceremony showed the king's respect for Mac Dang Dung.
In June 1527, Mac Dang Dung returned to the capital from Co Trai to be welcomed by many subjects. He forced the king to abdicate, but to legitimize it, Mac Dang Dung ordered someone to draft an edict of abdication.
Mac Dang Dung ascended the throne from then on, issued a general amnesty, immediately deposed King Le Cung Hoang, imprisoned him and the Queen Mother in Tay Noi Palace. A few months later, Mac Dang Dung forced Cung Vuong and the Queen Mother to commit suicide.
Thus, after 100 years of ruling the country (1428-1527), the rule of the early Le dynasty temporarily ended. Mac Dang Dung, by grasping the situation and using his talent, overthrew the Le king, established the Mac dynasty and continued to rule the country.
