Among the 7 Vietnamese people honored by UNESCO as world cultural celebrities, this person is the only one who is female.
She is the "Queen of Nom poetry" Ho Xuan Huong.
Ho Xuan Huong was born in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Quynh Doi village, Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province and grew up in the North. This helped her absorb and blend the cultural quintessence of two great lands.
According to the book Giai nhan di mac, Ho Xuan Huong was the daughter of Mr. Ho Phi Dien and his concubine Ha. Her house "looked down on West Lake", and later moved to "Tien Thi village, Tien Tuc commune, Tho Xuong district (now Nha Tho street). When she grew up, she built a small house on West Lake, named Co Nguyet Duong to receive scholars, to compose poems and discuss with them.
Ho Xuan Huong was an intelligent, sharp, quick-witted and very talented person, but her life was full of hardships. She poured all her feelings into her poems. As the poet Xuan Dieu once said, Ho Xuan Huong's poems are Xuan Huong's life, Xuan Huong's personality, her soul, her body, her eyes that see, her hands that touch, her feet that walk, her smile, her tears, her personality and fate.
She left behind about 150 poems, including the collection “Liu Xiang Ji” which has 24 poems in Chinese characters, 28 poems in Nom characters and about 100 other poems in a folk and liberal style. Among them is the extremely famous poem “Banh Troi Nuoc” which is included in the textbooks.
