In addition to Tuan Minh, class 11 English 1, Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted also has 20 students achieving IELTS 8.0, most of them taking the test for the first time. The fact that 21 students with IELTS 8.0 or higher studying in the same class is an unprecedented achievement at this school.
Students speak in English
Sharing with VietNamNet , Ms. Kieu Thi Na, homeroom teacher of English 11 class, said she was very happy and proud of her students but not too surprised with this result.
Ms. Na said that as students in the English major class, they have a good knowledge base, so right from the time they entered grade 10, teachers have directed students to achieve the goal of achieving IELTS 8.0 or higher. Ms. Na encouraged and motivated students to work hard together.
Ms. Na added, it is an English specialized class of the Specialized High School but the students Only 6-7 English lessons per week , limited official study time, so homeroom teachers are ready to support students anytime, anywhere, and students have the opportunity to develop self-study skills.
Ms. Na's strategy is to help students cultivate and improve their new vocabulary, especially focusing on academic vocabulary. According to her, without specialized vocabulary, students will have difficulty reading and understanding documents.
Ms. Na also believes that students' English knowledge is gradually improved not only through books, learning materials, and teacher guidance, but also through group activities and presentations in English.
In addition, during the teaching process, she requires students to pay attention to choosing materials. Learning materials must be standard from the Cambridge program. She also guides students to self-study through mini IELTS pages; IELTS materials; IELTS buddy; practice exams for excellent students in provinces and countries and strengthen the practice of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
In addition, the teacher often gives writing topics to help students develop their potential. In particular, to practice thinking, listening and speaking skills, students in her class all use English to exchange information during recess or in extracurricular activities.
“The students have different abilities, so I divided them into groups to design lessons, provide appropriate materials, and then assign topics to the groups for them to present and debate. I let the students focus on listening and reading practice in parallel with speaking and writing practice. In addition to the 32 students who achieved IELTS 7.5 or higher, there are 3 students in the class who are taking the next exam and have not yet received their results,” Ms. Na shared.
Ms. Na is proud that her students are all intelligent, proactive and determined in their studies. They not only do well in English but also achieve impressive results in other subjects.
