Gratitude appointment
On the morning of July 26, a delegation of officials and employees of Nguyen Ngoc Thang High School (Giong Trom District, Ben Tre Province) visited the monument "Those who lie on the horizon" at the Gac Ma soldiers' memorial site.
Mr. Nguyen Son Thuy - Chairman of the school's Union - shared: "We left Ben Tre last night and decided to choose the Gac Ma Memorial as our first stop. This is a project that we once mobilized union members to donate to pay tribute to those who died protecting our homeland's sea and islands...".
Among the people coming to offer incense, 150 children from a kindergarten in Nha Trang city stood around the foot of the monument "those who lie on the horizon" - a touching image for many people.
Ms. Ha Thi Ut - Vice Principal of the school - shared: "I have visited many places but when I step in here, I always feel moved. Hearing about the sacrifices of the uncles and brothers, seeing the artifacts... makes both teachers and students choke up."
Many students from Nha Trang University were present early in the morning, cleaning and repainting the words on the stone benches around the memorial area.
Mr. Khong Trung Thang - Chairman of the Board of Nha Trang University - said: Today's incense offering activity has the participation of nearly 50 students in the school's green summer volunteer team. This is a very important activity for students because in the educational environment, in addition to training knowledge and skills, an important part is training political qualities, ethics and lifestyle for students.
Practical gratitude
35 years later, without prior arrangement, three wives of Gac Ma martyrs who lost their husbands in their twenties, now grandmothers, met at the Gac Ma soldiers’ memorial site. The hardships were deeply etched on the faces of Do Thi Ha (Cam Ranh), Tran Thi Lieu (Quang Binh), and Mai Thi Hoa (Quang Binh).
For Ms. Tran Thi Lieu, wife of martyr Nguyen Mau Phong, over the years her longing has lessened somewhat when she imagines the Gac Ma memorial site as the place where her husband returned. Any sacrifice is painful, but for those who remain on the horizon of Gac Ma, it is also a painful peacetime experience.

“I dream of going to Truong Sa island to see where my husband rests. Thanks to everyone joining hands, my husband and I are returning to our motherland together, and I am very relieved. I imagine my husband has already returned here,” Ms. Lieu confided.
In July, the sky of Gac Ma is always blue. In the vast space of the Gac Ma memorial area, more than 50 cadres and members of Khanh Hoa Trade Union and relatives of 4 martyrs' families bowed their heads in silence to commemorate the heroic martyrs.
Arranging each wreath, Mr. Bui Hoai Nam - Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Labor Federation - on behalf of the delegation expressed gratitude to the souls of the martyrs and words of encouragement to the martyrs' families present today.
With the tradition of remembering the source of water when drinking and repaying kindness, Mr. Nam sent to the families of the martyrs of Gac Ma in Khanh Hoa a gift of 2 million VND/case.
