Raw shrimp prices in early 2024 showed signs of a slight increase. Whiteleg shrimp were purchased by traders at VND90,000/kg for 100 shrimp/kg; VND98,000/kg for 80 shrimp/kg; VND118,000/kg for 50 shrimp/kg, about VND15,000 - 20,000/kg higher than about 2 months ago. Black tiger shrimp of 40 shrimp/kg cost VND120,000/kg; 30 shrimp/kg cost VND210,000/kg and 20 shrimp/kg cost VND320,000/kg.
According to the prediction of raw shrimp purchasing facilities, shrimp prices are likely to increase in the coming time due to the demand to serve the market during the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024.
Rising prices are one of the factors that encourage farmers to renovate their ponds and stock new crops. However, many farmers are still hesitant due to fear of losses.
In Dong Hai district, where the shrimp farming area using the high-tech super-intensive model and industrial shrimp farming is the largest in Bac Lieu province, the ponds are still quite quiet at this time.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Hai district, 60 - 70% of the farming area following the super-intensive model is still in suspended ponds, only about 30% of ponds have shrimp.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Sang - a high-tech shrimp farmer in Long Dien Dong commune, Dong Hai district - said that shrimp farmers are facing many difficulties due to the continuously increasing costs of feed and veterinary medicine for aquatic products. Meanwhile, a loan program for the forestry and aquatic products sector worth about 15,000 billion VND has been implemented, but so far shrimp farmers have had difficulty accessing it because most of them do not meet the conditions required by the bank.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Xuan, Head of the Department of Fisheries of Bac Lieu province, said that shrimp farmers need to comply with recommendations on shrimp release schedules from specialized agencies and apply new techniques to production.
In intensive shrimp farming, feed costs account for more than 50 - 60% of the total production cost, so farmers should choose good quality feed, suitable for shrimp size, balance the amount of feed to match the shrimp output in the pond to avoid overfeeding, causing waste and water treatment costs. Shrimp farmers need to choose good quality and disease-free shrimp before stocking to increase the survival rate.
Mr. Xuan also advised shrimp farmers to avoid mass harvesting, stocking at low density, and extending the farming period to increase the size of shrimp for higher selling prices. At the same time, forming production links along the chain to increase the value of the shrimp industry.
Bac Lieu province currently has nearly 140,000 hectares of shrimp farming, with an output of over 300,000 tons/year, ranking second in the country in terms of area and shrimp farming output.
