On January 8, at the peak harvest time, but in the largest cassava growing area in Ninh Thuan province in the two communes of Quang Son and Hoa Son (Ninh Son district), the atmosphere lacked excitement because the price of cassava tubers continuously decreased.
Farmers worry about losing Tet because cassava prices have dropped sharply
Farmer Nguyen Thi Nhu Quynh in Tan Lap village (Hoa Son commune) sighed and said that compared to last year, the price of cassava this year has decreased by 50%, and is continuing to decrease, making farmers extremely impatient.
According to Ms. Quynh, last year the price of cassava in bulk was 2,500 - 2,700 VND/kg, and cassava with a high starch content of 30% was sold for 3,200 VND/kg.
But this year, the price of fresh cassava has continuously dropped sharply. Currently, the price sold to traders in bulk is only 1,300 VND/kg, and cassava with 30% starch content is only 2,200 VND/kg.
"This year, fertilizer and labor costs have both increased, while the price of cassava has decreased, so farmers have suffered heavy losses. Having invested nearly 15 million VND to plant 1.3 hectares of cassava since March 2024, if we sell at this price, my family will only get back the capital, and all the effort will be lost," said Ms. Quynh.

Not far away, Mr. Le Tuan Hai has more than 1.2 hectares of cassava being harvested. He said that in previous years, with the selling price of 2,500 - 2,700 VND/kg, his family would earn about 13 million VND in profit. However, this year, the price of cassava has continuously decreased, making his family feel like they are sitting on hot coals.
Sharing the same situation with Mr. Hai, Ms. Quynh has hundreds of other farmers in Hoa Son, Quang Son, My Son communes (Ninh Son district) and Phuoc Hoa, Phuoc Tien, Phuoc Dai (Bac Ai district).
There is a development plan but output and price are not stable.

Ninh Son and Bac Ai districts are the localities with the largest cassava growing areas in Ninh Thuan with a total area of about 3,300 hectares. Of which, the majority is concentrated in Ninh Son district with 3,145 hectares.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Son District - said that farmers in the area are now entering the cassava harvest season, and the yield and starch content are expected to remain stable. However, the selling price has dropped sharply compared to last year, making it very difficult for farmers.
"Fresh noodle prices have dropped sharply due to difficulties in the export market, mainly to the Chinese market," said Ms. Tam.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Thuan province, in order for cassava to develop sustainably, the province has issued a plan to develop the crop industry in Ninh Thuan province for the period 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030.
In which, the province's cassava development orientation until 2025 is to stabilize the planting area at about 5,120 hectares, with an output of 111,300 tons, concentrated in the two districts of Ninh Son 3,400 hectares and Bac Ai 1,500 hectares.
The agricultural sector will also promote technical advances in varieties and sustainable farming processes in cassava production, applying science and technology to increase productivity and enhance the value of harvested products per hectare of cassava land.
The locality also strives to ensure stable output and prices for cassava farmers.
