The new death toll and missing due to heavy rain was announced by Chinese authorities at a press conference this morning, August 11, according to China Daily .

Of the 29 dead, six were previously reported missing. Rescuers are continuing to search for 16 missing people, officials said.

Also at the press conference, officials said that Hebei province could take two years to rebuild after the floods, according to Xinhua.

Since late July, northern and northeastern China have suffered widespread flooding due to record rainfall following Typhoon Doksuri.

In particular, the rainfall in Hebei last week alone was more than the rainfall in an entire year, forcing more than 1.6 million people to evacuate, according to Reuters.

Hebei raised its emergency response level to the highest level on August 10 after record flooding last week to prepare for potentially damaging new downpours.

At a meeting to review the current situation, officials from China's flood control authorities warned of "negligence" in stepping up inspections of flood control channels and key dykes, Reuters reported, citing Chinese media.

The warning comes as northern China, still struggling with rising river levels and flooding caused by Typhoon Doksuri about two weeks ago, braces for more heavy rains as Typhoon Khanun is forecast to approach.

Typhoon Khanun is forecast to enter China from the northeast tomorrow, August 12, and is likely to bring heavy rain to the northeastern provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang today.

Heavy rain will increase the risk of flooding in southeastern parts of Heilongjiang, where water levels were already high after previous rains, Xinhua reported.

In other parts of China not directly affected by Khanun, such as Gansu and Qinghai in the northwest, as well as Yunnan and Sichuan in the southwest, authorities have extended flash flood warnings amid China's unusually wet summer.
