On August 9, Yonhap News Agency reported that the South Korean Presidential Office has declared a 24-hour state of emergency to deal with Typhoon Khanun, which is expected to make landfall on the southeastern coast of the country on August 10.
Typhoon Khanun, which was forecast to move north, has now changed its path and is likely to sweep across the Seoul metropolitan area.
In Japan, due to the impact of Typhoon Khanun causing heavy rain in the southern region, many flights were canceled and many railway lines had to temporarily suspend operations on August 9. Many areas were flooded after a week of heavy rain.
On the same day, the Mekong River Commission said that the Xayaboury Hydropower Plant on the mainstream of the Mekong River in Laos may release water in the coming days. The Mekong River Commission advised downstream communities to prepare for changes in water levels on the Mekong River.
In China, according to official statistics released by Chinese authorities, as of August 8, 33 people have died and 18 are missing in recent floods in the capital Beijing and surrounding areas. The floods have also affected nearly 1.29 million people, destroyed 59,000 homes and severely damaged 147,000 homes.
