On September 27, at the 18th session of the 10th term Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, the city approved the investment policy for the project to expand the road leading to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway (from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2).
The 3.2km long, 4-lane section from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2 is part of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, playing the main role of connecting the North - South Expressway with Ho Chi Minh City. However, in the past, both this expressway and the access road have been overloaded and often congested. Therefore, investment in expanding this section is very necessary.
The expansion project will have a total investment of VND938.9 billion, funded from the state budget, and implemented from 2024-2027. The expansion scale will be from 4 lanes to 8 lanes with a total route length of 3.2km. The implementation of this project is also considered favorable as it requires little site clearance because it has been implemented before.
The project is scheduled to start in 2025 and be completed within a year. When completed, it will be synchronized with the An Phu intersection, which is currently under construction with a three-storey scale and is expected to be put into operation at the end of 2025.
The upgraded access road will also be connected to the main Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway, which will be expanded in the near future, helping to increase connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City and Long Thanh airport and the Southeast.
The 55km-long, 4-lane Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway has been in operation since 2016 with a total investment of more than VND20,600 billion.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, since its inauguration, traffic volume on the expressway has been steadily increasing, at an average rate of 11.12% per year. In particular, the section from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh is forecasted to have about 72,254 vehicles per day and night by 2025, exceeding the capacity of the existing 4-lane scale by 25%.
Given this situation, the expansion of the expressway section from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh, including the road leading from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2, is very necessary and urgent to address the increasing traffic pressure.
In addition to the above project implemented by Ho Chi Minh City, the State Capital Management Committee at Enterprises recently proposed that the Government assign the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) to invest in upgrading the Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway to 8-10 lanes.
The planned section is 22km long, from the Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 2 interchange to Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway, Dong Nai. The total investment for this project is estimated at VND14,955 billion.
