International tourists limit travel to the US due to Trump's policies

The number of foreign tourists to the US is expected to decline significantly by 2025, largely due to the controversial policies of US President Donald Trump.

According to the Straits Times on March 23, the US tourism industry is facing the risk of serious decline due to the controversial policies of US President Donald Trump, causing many foreign tourists to be angry and turn away, especially from Canada, Mexico and Western Europe.

International arrivals to the US are expected to decline 5.1% in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to a report by Tourism Economics, in contrast to the previous forecast of 8.8% growth.

Spending by foreign tourists is also forecast to fall 10.9%, causing serious damage to the US tourism industry.

The situation is likely to get worse due to “growing antipathy” towards the US, said Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics.

International companies and organizations may avoid holding events in the US or reduce the number of employees working here, directly affecting business tourism.

A YouGov survey in December 2024 found that 35% of tourists from 16 European and Asian countries said they were less likely to travel to the US under Trump, while only 22% said they were likely to.

Tourists from Western Europe — who will account for 37% of international arrivals to the U.S. by 2024 — are the group most likely to seek alternative destinations. In particular, the number of visitors from Canada and Mexico, two important markets for the U.S. tourism industry, is falling rapidly.

The number of Canadians returning from the United States fell 23 per cent in February compared to the same month a year earlier, marking the second consecutive month of decline, according to Statistics Canada.

In New York, which is expected to welcome 12.9 million foreign visitors by 2024, the effect is already evident in plummeting searches for hotels and Broadway tickets.

United Airlines also saw a large drop in the number of passengers from Canada to the US, along with a decline in domestic travel demand.

Faced with a decline in tourists, Tourism Economics predicts that the US tourism industry could suffer a loss of about $64 billion in revenue by 2025.

Americans themselves are worried about the unstable economic situation, with words like "recession" and "inflation" making many people afraid to travel, even domestically. At the same time, the rising value of the US dollar can make travel more expensive, causing international visitors to choose other destinations or shorten their stay in the US.

Experts also worry that tighter immigration policies could affect upcoming major sporting events in the US, such as the 2025 Ryder Cup, the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2026 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
