Dong Nai identifies opportunities and challenges when Long Thanh Airport comes into operation
When Long Thanh airport comes into operation in 2026, it will be a great opportunity for Dong Nai to "take off", but this locality will face many significant challenges in investment, planning and construction.
This issue was mentioned by experts at the Workshop "Opportunities and challenges for Dong Nai after Long Thanh airport comes into operation", organized by the Provincial Party Committee and People's Committee of Dong Nai province.
Opportunities with great challenges
Most departments, branches and experts attending the workshop agreed that when Long Thanh Airport is put into operation, Dong Nai will benefit greatly from the most important project in the country.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Nguyen, Director of Dong Nai Department of Planning and Investment, said that in the period from now to 2030, with a vision to 2050, Dong Nai determined to take Long Thanh airport as the center of economic development, helping the locality make a breakthrough in transforming the economic model from breadth to depth.

From there, shift from mixed supporting industries to 3 key industrial groups including: aviation industry, semiconductor industry, chip manufacturing and artificial intelligence...
When Long Thanh Airport comes into operation, it will help Dong Nai develop urban areas, logistics centers, industrial parks, etc. However, along with opportunities, there are also many difficulties and challenges.
According to the Director of the Department of Planning and Investment of Dong Nai, there are four challenges that Dong Nai has to face: infrastructure has not been invested in a timely manner; labor resources have not met demand; there are no policies for airport urban areas; rapid urbanization will lead to many consequences.
Looking at the overall scale of the entire Southeast region, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Thien - former Director of the Vietnam Economic Institute said that in recent years, the Southeast region has had many bottlenecks that need to be resolved.
Therefore, when Long Thanh airport is built, along with investment in a series of highways and belt roads, bottlenecks will gradually be removed.
Regarding Dong Nai, Mr. Thien said that when Long Thanh Airport comes into operation, the locality will face many challenges in the process of investing in large-scale investment projects to take advantage of and exploit the potential of this international airport.
“When there is a large airport, the province wants to invest in large-scale projects quickly, but Dong Nai’s resources are limited. Therefore, the province needs big investors with large capital to take advantage of the opportunity,” Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien emphasized.
Experts recommend low-density residential planning around the airport
Although Long Thanh Airport will not be put into operation until 2026, based on his experience in consulting on airport projects abroad, Mr. Jamie Bloomfield, Director of Propelo Aviation Company (Singapore), recommends that Dong Nai needs to consider options to protect the space outside the airport boundary from now on.
“When Long Thanh Airport comes into operation, it will create momentum for urban development, but this development itself can hinder the potential for expansion or adjustment in the future,” Mr. Jamie Bloomfield pointed out the problem.

This expert believes that Dong Nai needs to have a plan to protect the space outside the airport boundary from now on. In particular, it is necessary to limit the construction of high-rise buildings, and only build parking lots and golf courses around the airport.
At the same time, develop reasonable residential areas, planning around the airport to have low population density to avoid the airport being located in an urban area in the future, causing noise.
From the opinions of experts, Secretary of Dong Nai Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Hong Linh summarized and pointed out 5 challenges that the province will have to face when Long Thanh Airport comes into operation: quality human resources; airport economy; completing traffic infrastructure; developing services for the airport; handling and controlling environmental issues; economic security, preventing high-tech crimes.
“All of the above challenges require the Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee to study and propose proactive solutions to overcome and overcome them in the coming time. Only then can Dong Nai successfully realize its goal of becoming a civilized, modern, high-growth province by 2030, leading in the development of aviation economy and high-tech industry,” emphasized the Secretary of the Dong Nai Provincial Party Committee.
