VNVC vaccination system has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Substipharm Biologics Pharmaceutical Company (Switzerland), opening up opportunities to bring to Vietnam many new vaccines, especially vaccines to prevent hand, foot and mouth disease caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71).
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a disease for which there is currently no specific treatment, putting great pressure on the health system, so the deployment of preventive vaccines is essential. |
This is the most severe strain of the virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease, causing tens of thousands of Vietnamese children to become ill, suffer complications and die over the years.
At the signing ceremony, the two sides agreed on the goal of cooperation for public health, focusing on enhancing scientific research, clinical research, improving knowledge for medical staff and raising public awareness of preventive measures, especially hand, foot and mouth disease in children.
The company specializes in developing, supplying and distributing high-quality vaccines in more than 80 countries. Currently, Substipharm Biologics owns the Imojev vaccine against Japanese encephalitis, which was brought to Vietnam by VNVC and Sanofi in 2019, helping to protect the health of millions of children and adults in Vietnam.
By prioritizing the introduction of hand, foot and mouth disease vaccines to Vietnam, Substipharm Biologics hopes to contribute to the fight against this dangerous disease, especially in areas with high rates of infection.
Hand, foot and mouth disease vaccine is recommended for children from 2 months to under 6 years old. Research results published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet show that this vaccine is up to 96.8% effective in protecting against hand, foot and mouth disease caused by EV71, a virus strain that is circulating and causing many severe cases. The vaccine is produced with modern technology, ensuring safety for children.
"We hope to soon bring the hand, foot and mouth disease vaccine to Vietnam, helping to protect children and minimize dangerous complications caused by the disease, while reducing the burden on families and society," said Mr. Hervé Profit, Senior Director of Substipharm Biologics.
According to Mr. Ngo Chi Dung, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of the VNVC Vaccination System, this is an important step in bringing hand, foot and mouth disease vaccines to Vietnam to prevent this disease, which has caused many deaths in children over the years. "Hand, foot and mouth disease is a disease that currently has no specific treatment, causing great pressure on the health system, so the deployment of preventive vaccines is very necessary," Mr. Dung shared.
Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by two main groups of viruses: Coxsackie A16 (CA16) and Enterovirus 71 (EV71). CA16 virus infection usually causes mild illness that can be treated at home, while EV71 causes more severe illness with many dangerous complications such as encephalitis, meningitis, myocarditis, pneumonia, respiratory failure and can lead to death if not treated promptly.
Recent hand, foot and mouth disease outbreaks in Vietnam have all been linked to the EV71 virus, with the largest outbreak in 2023 causing more than 180,000 children to become ill and 31 deaths.
According to experts, hand, foot and mouth disease is easily spread through contact with secretions from the nose, throat, saliva and blisters of the patient, or indirect contact with the patient's personal items. Initial symptoms include fever, poor appetite, sore throat, followed by mouth ulcers and rash on the hands, feet, which can spread to the buttocks and genitals.
Children under 5 years old are susceptible to diseases because their immune systems are not fully developed, while facilities such as nurseries and kindergartens are high-risk environments for infection.
