Director Hoang Nam is happy when Ghost Lights receives positive signals at the box office.
After 2 days of release, The Ghost Light surprised everyone when it competed with the movie Nu hon bac bien (The Billion Dollar Kiss) at the box office. According to Box Office Vietnam, on February 8 alone, the work directed by Hoang Nam is currently ranked first with revenue reaching 10.4 billion VND (as of 4 p.m.). Meanwhile, Thu Trang's film revenue reached 10.2 billion VND on February 8. Although it had a total revenue of more than 281 billion VND, in terms of revenue on February 8, Tran Thanh's The Four Guardians only ranked third with 7.3 billion VND.
However, despite being a box office hit, Soul Lights has created a lot of controversy on social media. Many people believe that despite being an amateur, Hoang Nam has created a well-crafted work with a novel theme. However, there are also opinions that the film still has many limitations in terms of content or the actors' acting... Some netizens believe that Soul Lights is being promoted too much, while the quality is not commensurate with the revenue.
According to the director, folk culture is one of the factors that helps the film "The Ghost Lamp" attract the attention of the audience.
Sharing with us, Hoang Nam - director of The Ghost Lights expressed his happiness when his first work had positive signs in terms of revenue. He said that before that, he could not help but worry because "he did not know whether people would accept his genre of film or not".
According to the director, this year’s Tet film market is a competition between humorous works with love themes that are of interest to young people. Above all, the directors of the films are all names that can guarantee box office. Meanwhile, Hoang Nam sees his film as having “nothing but plot and effort”. “The main actors are all new faces, and everyone tries to make the audience accept them. Up to now, I can breathe a sigh of relief. I believe that if the film is of quality, the audience will accept it”, he shared.
Director Hoang Nam is not afraid to listen to the audience's comments on the film.
Hoang Nam confided that when he “crossed over” to cinema, he followed the guiding principle of being creative, focusing on Vietnamese culture. The director believes that this is also one of the factors that helped Dark Souls be well received when it was released in theaters. He revealed: “To have this film, I spent 10 years studying culture, supplementing my knowledge and 3 years preparing the script for the film.”
Faced with controversies about the content or the actors' performances, Hoang Nam admitted that he was "used to mixed opinions". For him, that is inevitable when a work is released in theaters, but "I am quite sensitive to the comments around me, and can recognize what is a suggestion". He confided: "I have to have the courage to accept it. I am very grateful to those who give me suggestions to help me improve. This is my first project, so there are still many things that are not good. I hope to hear more comments, so that the next product is better. I hope the audience can recognize what is a suggestion and what is malicious".
Hoang Nam affirmed that with a script full of cultural content, he does not expect much in terms of revenue. Instead, the director hopes that many people can sympathize with him. “For me, finance is not too important. I just need enough to have a life with enough food and clothes and do the things I love. If the audience gives me a chance, I will do another film project,” he shared.
