Legendary road on the sea
On the occasion of the People's Committee of Phu Yen province organizing the 60th anniversary of Vung Ro wharf receiving the first shipment from the No-number ship to the sea recently, we heard the Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Ho Dac Thanh, former captain of ship 41, recount the heroic historical journey of the first shipments of the No-number ship to the wharf.
“After 7 times commanding ships carrying weapons to the provinces of the Southwest, when I was assigned by my superiors to command ships carrying weapons to Vung Ro port to support my homeland in fighting the enemy, I felt very happy and moved because that wish had come true. With an excited spirit, my teammates and I prepared and studied documents to find a way to safely enter the port, ensuring weapons to support the provinces of Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak to fight the enemy,” Mr. Thanh recalled and continued, the three times the ship entered the port were three times extremely tense battles of wits between us and the enemy. To escape the enemy's tight control, we disguised ourselves as a fishing boat so that our brothers could mend nets, dry fish, hang a "3-striped" flag on the mast, and a sailor held a bottle of water (old wine) up as if to beckon and invite "brothers" to come down and drink in order to deceive the enemy. All for the success or failure of the trip.
Vung Ro Wharf is associated with the strategic transport route - "Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea", together with "Truong Son Road - Ho Chi Minh Trail" has become a symbol of glory of the whole nation, the embodiment of the will and aspiration to fight against foreign invaders to unify the country.
From Vung Ro Wharf, secret trails wound through ravines and steep passes, with thousands of young volunteers and laborers day and night transporting weapons and goods to the rear base and spreading to all provinces of the South Central battlefield. From November 1964 to February 1965, Vung Ro Wharf welcomed 4 unnumbered ships, providing nearly 200 tons of weapons to the provinces of Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, and Dak Lak. Thanks to that, the fighting strength of the army and people of the 3 provinces of Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, and Dak Lak was raised, achieving many resounding victories, contributing to the complete bankruptcy of the "Special War" strategy of the US - puppet army on the battlefield of Zone 5.
Standing in front of the Vung Ro Wharf relic, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Ho Dac Thanh of Vung Ro Ship No Number choked up: "That day, there was not only laughter and joy, but also tears of sorrow in the sacrifice and loss of the officers, sailors and forces at the wharf - when ship 143 was discovered by the enemy at Vung Ro. You bravely and tenaciously fought to protect the ship, the wharf and many comrades sacrificed themselves into the sea of Vung Ro and the sea and sky of the Fatherland... leaving in the hearts of us officers and sailors an infinite sorrow".
Mr. Dang Minh, a playwright from the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, shared: I have been to Vung Ro twice, and each time I have had very special feelings. However, this time I was more honored, because I directly listened to the confidences of living witnesses in the journey to create the historical "Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea". Indeed, at that time, our ancestors were very heroic, brave, and loved the country without fear of danger. Despite the lack of everything, our army was very determined to protect the country.
According to composer Dang Minh, the more I travel, the more I love and respect my ancestors and feel responsible for creating works to remember their contributions. From trips to Vung Ro, an island, I recently wrote the play Hoang Sa Fleet, which won a B prize and was staged and performed very successfully by the Huong Tram Opera Troupe.
Promote heroic historical images to tourists
Coming to Vung Ro today, we not only see the heroic image of Vung Ro wharf in battle, but also a cultural and historical tourist destination to introduce to domestic and foreign tourists the natural beauty and a historical legend in the fight against foreign invaders of our nation in general, and of Phu Yen province in particular.
Phu Yen Provincial Youth Union Secretary Luong Minh Tung shared: Phu Yen youth is grateful and proud of the heroic tradition of their fathers and brothers who created the miracle of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea, those who opened and carried out the task of transporting weapons from the rear to the front line on the legendary road in the East Sea. Today, Vung Ro is an area with many potentials and advantages, opening up many economic development opportunities for Phu Yen province. This is the driving force that urges each member and youth to constantly cultivate and practice revolutionary ethics, strive to study, work and produce.
Mr. Pham Dai Duong, Secretary of Phu Yen Provincial Party Committee, said: Vung Ro and the surrounding area are promoting investment to become a bustling seaport area, a gateway to the East Sea, an important traffic hub, promoting the socio-economic development of Phu Yen and the South Central region; creating an important premise for Vung Ro in particular, Phu Yen in general, and the whole country, to continue to grow stronger in terms of the sea, get rich from the sea, contributing to constantly consolidating and strengthening the national defense posture associated with the people's security posture in the area to become increasingly solid.
“We will focus on mobilizing resources to protect and promote the value of the relic, turning Vung Ro Wharf and the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea into a center for historical education, a meaningful destination in sustainable tourism development, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality and the whole country”, Mr. Pham Dai Duong emphasized and shared that the 60th anniversary of Vung Ro Wharf receiving the first shipment of the Ship Without Number took place at a time when our country is facing a historic opportunity to bring the country into a new era, an era of national growth, as stated by General Secretary To Lam.
