Multi-tree, multi-child combination model
After converting production from rice monoculture to rice-shrimp model, Mr. Danh Ia's family life (Ngo Kim hamlet, Ninh Thanh Loi commune, Hong Dan district, Bac Lieu province) gradually improved, income increased and accumulated.
With nearly 4 hectares of land for production, in the dry season he raises tiger prawns and crabs; in the rainy season he grows rice combined with raising giant freshwater prawns and fish. In addition, he also develops a model of raising rabbits and goats to generate additional income for his family.
Mr. Danh Ia shared: "Thanks to diligently researching, learning and participating in training courses on livestock and crop farming, over the years, my family's production has been highly effective, with profits of several hundred million VND each year."
Not only focusing on developing the family economy, Mr. Danh Ia also enthusiastically shares effective production experiences with neighbors.
In particular, he has mobilized many farming households to establish a cooperative group with an area of over 300 hectares. Thanks to that, the members of the group can buy shrimp seeds, rice seeds, fertilizers, medicines... at lower prices than buying individually, helping to reduce investment costs in production. As a result, for many years, Mr. Danh Ia has been recognized as a good farmer at all levels.
Determined to break the monoculture in production, members of Quyet Tien Cooperative (Phuoc Long district) have applied the method of rotating rice and various other crops.
Depending on the time, members invest in growing rice, squash, corn and watermelon. Thanks to diversifying crops on the same area, members have a fairly high income, with each hectare earning from 300 to 500 million VND/year. According to the functional sector of Phuoc Long district, the model of bringing colors to the fields brings profits 3 to 5 times higher than growing rice.

Bringing vegetables to the field
In order to break the monoculture of rice, farmers in the province have applied many models of bringing color to the fields, bringing high economic efficiency.
The model of bringing color to the fields gives many times higher profits than rice cultivation, thereby contributing to increasing income for rural people. The most prominent movement in bringing color to the fields is Phuoc Long district.
Previously, farmers in Vinh Thanh commune (Phuoc Long district) switched to growing water celery instead of rice, but now many households continue to grow pennywort in their fields. Currently, Vinh Thanh commune has more than 70 hectares with more than 450 households growing pennywort, with an estimated annual output of over 6,500 tons.
According to many farmers, the income from the model of planting pennywort in the fields is from 100 - 200 million VND/ha/year. Compared to rice cultivation, this model gives 5 - 10 times higher profits. And this is also considered a breakthrough model and a highlight of Vinh Thanh commune today...
Mr. Tran Van Liem - Vice Chairman of Phuoc Long District People's Committee, said: "In the near future, the district will expand the model of bringing colors to the fields, planting according to crop rotation. At the same time, encourage people to take advantage of vacant land around their houses and fields to grow vegetables, increasing family income."
Like other localities, Vinh Loi district also has many effective production models. Some models that have been and are being replicated by the locality are the models of growing chives, raising goats, raising eels, growing apples, safe rice, fattening cows, snake farming, a combined model of raising soft-shell turtles - horseshoe crabs - black apple snails, a model of growing mulberry and raising fish, etc.
In particular, recently, the model of growing pennywort in the fields has become popular and this model has developed strongly in 2 communes (Vinh Hung, Vinh Hung A) with more than 30 hectares. Pennywort is harvested once a month with a yield of about 1 - 1.5 tons/cong of land, after deducting expenses, farmers earn a profit of 10 - 15 million VND/cong/month...
Mr. To Thanh Hai - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Loi district, Bac Lieu province said: "Currently, there are many effective production models in the district, but the issue of concern is the output. Therefore, the district will re-plan the raw material area and promote linkages, product consumption, ensuring long-term output for farmers".
In order for production models to develop sustainably, localities need to guide farmers to produce and apply advanced and economical irrigation systems, ensuring food safety. Thereby helping agricultural products, especially vegetables, to meet VietGAP standards to be brought into the supermarket system, in order to increase value and improve farmers' income.
