According to statistics from the agricultural sector, Thanh Hoa province has more than 200 units participating in the production and trading of plant varieties and about 20 units outside the province operating in production and trading in the area. On average, each year, districts, towns and cities in the province have a demand for about 11,000 tons of high-quality rice seeds, 1,000 tons of corn seeds, 2,000 tons of peanut seeds, 300 tons of soybean seeds...
Staff of Dong Luat Forest Protection Management Station (Thanh My commune, Thach Thanh) coordinated with forest planting households to clear and prune tissue-cultured hybrid acacia areas.
Based on market demand, through programs, projects, and plans, many units and enterprises in the province have participated in researching, selecting, producing or importing plant varieties for production. Most of them are superior varieties that have been widely applied, contributing to increasing productivity, quality, value and competitiveness for the agricultural sector.
Thanh Hoa province identifies sustainable agricultural development and the application of science and technology (S&T) in selecting and creating plant and animal breeds as urgent tasks. From 2019 to present, Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute has researched, applied and developed 16 technological processes in the fields of cultivation (3 fields), forestry (2 fields), livestock (3 technologies), aquaculture (2 technologies) and biotechnology (6 technologies). In addition, the institute has received and mastered 4 new technological processes from outside such as: Invitro Kim Tuyen Orchid rapid multiplication technology; Compost Maken production technology to treat agricultural waste into organic microbial fertilizers; technology to produce hybrid acacia varieties using tissue culture method; Biogreen production technology to treat soil contaminated with pesticides.
Through the application of existing technologies, the Institute of Agriculture has researched and selected 3 new rice varieties (Sao Vang, Viet Thanh 30, VNN10), of which Sao Vang is a purebred rice variety of high quality that has been recognized by the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) for circulation in the Northern midland and mountainous region; 3 new tomato varieties (large-fruited tomato VNN10, black tomato VNN16, cherry tomato VNN39); conducted investigations, evaluations, and selected 183 superior trees, and obtained forestry varieties including major large-wood forestry trees and rare, indigenous species with scientific and economic value.
With financial and technical support from the VFBC project, the Thach Thanh Forest Protection Management Board (FPMB) has built many tissue culture models to nurture large timber forests, aiming to improve the quality and value of planted forests, contributing to increasing productivity and quality of planted forests. As a result, from 2023 to present, the Thach Thanh FPMB has provided technical guidance, supplied seedlings and planted more than 45.5 hectares of tissue-cultured acacia trees and planted new eucalyptus varieties such as GLGU9, GLSE9, GLU4 and Cu Vi DH32-29 in the communes of Thanh My, Ngoc Trao, Van Du town... In addition, the FPMB has also piloted a number of crops such as doi for grafting seeds (area of 10 hectares), macadamia (over 90 hectares) and a number of areas for planting high-value forestry trees such as rosewood, sua, camphor... which have initially brought about economic efficiency.
As one of the leading enterprises in agricultural seed production in the province, Thanh Hoa Seed Joint Stock Company is always a pioneer in research, development, and application of science and technology to bring to the market many new plant varieties with high productivity and quality, recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as national varieties, and commercialized. Accordingly, the company actively learns, approaches, and cooperates with scientists from leading research units in the field of new varieties, applying molecular biotechnology to select and create new rice varieties with high productivity, good quality, resistance and adaptation to climate change. Typical are Lam Son 8 purebred rice and Thanh Huong purebred rice with the advantages of short growth time, good resistance to pests and adverse external conditions, wide adaptability, suitable for many ecological regions from the Northern provinces, the Central provinces and the South Central Coast, bringing high economic efficiency. Every year, the company supplies the market with about 100 tons of Thanh Huong rice varieties. Currently, these rice varieties have been officially recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as new plant varieties, and are being circulated in the northern provinces...
In addition, the company also registered for intellectual property protection for scientific and technological products and was granted a certificate of protection for new plant varieties by the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) for Lam Son 8 rice variety, DT80 rice variety, Thuan Viet 1 rice variety, Thanh Huong rice variety... The results showed that the rice varieties researched and created by the company as well as the rice varieties received from the above units are all varieties with short growing time, high yield, good quality, wide adaptability, suitable for many ecological regions and have been included in the annual rice variety production structure by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the provinces.
Director of Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute Nguyen Dinh Hai said: "Thanh Hoa province needs to devote significant resources to scientific research projects on new plant and animal varieties, projects on conservation of native plant and animal varieties; at the same time, cooperate with research institutes and universities to transfer technology. In particular, linking with businesses to promote the commercialization of research results also needs to be focused on. In addition, it is necessary to build smart agricultural models, develop farms using automation technology, robots and artificial intelligence in the production process, helping to reduce manual labor, improve efficiency and ensure the sustainability of agricultural production".
Mr. Hai also affirmed, "The application of advanced technology in breeding has helped create plant and animal varieties with high productivity, superior quality, good resistance to adverse weather conditions and diseases... Therefore, the application of science and technology in research and breeding of plant and animal varieties will be an important foundation to help Thanh Hoa develop sustainable and modern agriculture and meet the requirements of the international market in the period 2025-2030".
