Doctors are performing a stent graft placement for a patient with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

The patient is Nguyen Xuan V., 59 years old, from Tho Binh commune (Trieu Son), with a history of high blood pressure and many years of smoking tobacco. Ten days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had symptoms of abdominal pain around the navel, and felt a large bulge next to the navel. The patient came to the clinic and was admitted for inpatient treatment at the Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital.

After being examined and doing the necessary tests, the doctors discovered on the 128-slice CT scan that the patient had an abdominal aortic aneurysm measuring 63 x 83mm, with 17mm thick atherosclerosis, along with a 22mm right common iliac artery aneurysm and a 27mm left iliac artery aneurysm.

Recognizing that this was a large aneurysm with a very high risk of rupture and life-threatening if not treated promptly, the doctors decided to place a stent graft on the patient.

With the stent graft intervention technique, doctors proceed through the femoral artery in the groin area to insert specialized instruments into the artery to access the abdominal aortic aneurysm and place the stent graft at the damaged site.

After 1 hour of intervention, the patient was completely awake, no longer had symptoms of abdominal pain, chest pain, stable blood pressure, could talk, eat, and live normally, and the bulge near the navel had shrunk.

After 1 week of monitoring and treatment according to the protocol, the results of 128-slice MSCT showed that the stent graft was in the correct position, there was no stent leakage, the patient's health recovered well and he was discharged from the hospital.

It is known that the Department of Cardiology, Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital has deployed stent graft placement technique on patients with aortic aneurysm since 2021 with a team of professional and experienced surgeons.

In addition, the hospital has been equipped with a system of modern machinery such as: 128-slice CT scanner, new generation MRI scanner; echocardiography, 4D vascular ultrasound, two DSA systems... thereby helping doctors to screen, accurately diagnose, timely intervene and effectively treat cardiovascular and vascular diseases, contributing to improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, creating conditions for people to enjoy high-tech, specialized services right in the province.
