The British newspaper The Standard quoted Republican candidate Donald Trump as saying that he would have been “dead” if he had not turned around to read a chart about illegal immigrants, and described the incident in which a bullet grazed his ear as “a very surreal experience.”
“If I had turned my head half way, the bullet would have hit the back of my brain. If I had turned the other way, it would have gone through my skull. Because the board was high up, I had to look up. The chance of me turning my head perfectly was probably one in a thousand, so I wouldn’t be here,” the former US President said.
According to Mr. Trump, the doctor treating him said he had never seen anything like this and called it "a miracle."
Referring to the photo of himself raising his fist and shouting in front of supporters immediately after the incident, the former White House owner shared: "A lot of people said it was the most impressive photo they had ever seen. They were right and I did not die. Often you have to die to have a photo of a lifetime."
Donald Trump, 78, wanted to convey to his supporters that he was fine: “I said I had to step out. I don’t want to be taken out. I have no problem walking.”
Sharing with The Washington Examiner , the former US President said that he has completely rewritten his speech at the Republican National Convention, which will be delivered next Thursday, focusing on national unity after the recent assassination attempt.
Earlier, a day after the assassination, Mr. Trump affirmed: “In this moment, nothing is more important than that we must unite, must show true American character, be strong, determined and not allow evil to prevail.”
President-elect Joe Biden has directed the head of the US Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention, which takes place from July 15-18, declaring that "nowhere in America should this kind of violence - or any other kind of violence - be allowed."
This is now the most serious assassination attempt on a US President or presidential candidate since US President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
