The Hamas-run Gaza Health Department said power was cut and generators stopped working after an Israeli raid on Nasser Hospital - one of the last major medical facilities still operating in the Gaza Strip. Five patients died from lack of oxygen.

The health department said the patients, who were being treated in the intensive care unit, died "due to a power outage that cut off the oxygen supply." The department is concerned for the lives of four other patients in the unit and three children in the neonatal unit.

In recent days, fierce fighting has broken out around Nasser Hospital. By late on February 16, a large number of medical staff, patients and evacuees were being held and interrogated by the Israeli military. Many Doctors Without Borders doctors had to abandon their patients and flee.

However, the Israeli military insisted that all vital systems at the hospital continued to operate despite the generator failure, denying that it had targeted the generator. The Israeli military statement added that efforts were underway to repair the generator, while special forces had brought a replacement generator to the hospital.
